Editorial-Wise Congratulations To Tho Wrights Mr. and Mrs. Paul Wright, well known West Washington Street residents, will be married 50 years on Thursday, April 1. Mr. Wright, until his retirement, was manager and pharmacist at the old Owl Drug Store for many years. This business connection as well as his courtesy gained him a vast circle of friends and acquaintances. Untold numbers over the years have dropped in the Owl just to have a chat and a “coke” with Paul. He also was a member of the Greencastle Band when weekly concerts were presented on the public square during the summer months. Mrs. Wright, the former Freda Hoffman, played the piano at the Opera House during the earlier days of the silent movies. Present plans call for the golden wedding celebration to be held at the Graver Nursing Home. The Daily Banner takes pleasure in congratulating Mr. and Mrs. Wright on 50 years of matrimony.

WASHINGTON UPI — An Agriculture Department study of the food grain needs of India 10 years from now indicates production of wheat and rice there will fall far short of planned goals. The department’s Economic Research Service predicted India will need annual food grain imports of six to seven million tons by 1975-76. ERS said the United States is expected to be India’s principal supplier.

The Agriculture Department said the spring signup period for participation in the 1965 wheat program shows so far that operators of 849,052 farms have agreed to divert 6,757.222 acres from wheat production. The department announced the signup period, originally scheduled for Feb. 8 through March 26, had been extended to April 2 in certain counties because of severe weather conditions. Tlte number of participants represent the cumulative total of last fall’s winter wheat crop signers and current signers for the spring wheat crop.

The department said signed paraicipants operate farms with effective wheat allotments totaling 41.4 million acres.

Stocker and feeder cattle and calves shipped into eight principial feeding states in the north central region during February totaled 279,000 head, down 13 per cent from the same period a year ago, according to the Crop Reporting Board. Shipments of stocker and feeder lambs into the same states in February totaled 129,000 head, down 7 per cent from a year earlier. The feedlot is usually the last stop before the fattened animal goes to the terminal market for sale to a packing firm. The principal feed states are Ohio, Indiana, Illinois. Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota and Nebraska.

In Memory In memory of our mother, Bessie L. Grimes, who passed away 1 year ago today. AWAY I cannot say, and I will not say That she is dead—she is just away! With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand, She has wandered into an unknown land. And left us dreaming how very fair It needs must be, since she lingers there. And you—O you, who the wildest yearn For the old time step and the glad return, Think of her faring on, as dear In the love of there as the love of here: Think of her still as the same, I say; She is not dead—she is just away! Sadly missed by the children.

When this hand was played recently at Ledgerer’s house in Beverly Hills the bidding was too ambitious. Some experts would bid only one spade at South’s first turn or would decline the eventual slam invitation. If North bid five diamonds rather than five spades, South would stop short of slam. But South did get to slam, and Lederer led the ace of clubs from the West hand. Now the defenders were sure to take the setting trick with the ace of hearts if they just sat still. West continued with the queen of clubs, hoping his part ner would ruff. Declarer discarded a heart on the king of clubs and led a low club from dummy. OVERDOSE This is where East fell victim to an overdose of advice. Remembering vaguely something he had read about promoting a trump trick for partner, East ruffed with the eight of spades. This overactive play cost him 1,530 points. Declarer, screen writer-direc-tor Billy Wilder, over-ruffed and led a trump to dummy’s king. When the nine of spades dropped, Wilder had an extra entry to dummy. He ruffed another club and got back to dummy with the seven of spades to discard the rest of his hearts on two good clubs and the top diamonds. “Your bridge columns are perfect,” Wilder told me. “They give people the notion they ought to do something even though they don’t know exactly what. That’s the way I like it.” He paused for a moment and suggested: “Just say how I played the hand if you write this up. Don’t mention the bidding.”

MEDICINE CHEST “LEFTOVERS”

There’s but one good place in the home for “leftovers.” That’s the refrigerator—and the “leftovers” should be foods, not medicines. Medicine chest “leftovers” are risky at best, and often downright dangerous. The medicine your physician prescribed a year or so ago was intended to be used then, not now. Avoid serious danger—dump old medicine at once. Each illness requires scientific diagnosis — and, usually, specialized medicine is indicated. See your physician. Let him decide what's best.
