Parolee Wounds Three Persons VINCENNES UPI — A deputy sheriff, a police chief and an airport office attendant were in good condition in a Vincennes hospital today from gunshot wounds suffered in an altercation with an Illinois parolee. Deputy Sheriff Herman Watters of Gallatin County, 111., Shawneetown, 111., Police Chief Paul Wood and Dwane Johnson, 26, Vincennes, were shot when the parolee dodged an object which Johnson threw at him in the office of O’Neill Airport, across the Wabash River from Vincennes near Lawrenceville, HI. Held in connection with the shooting was Vernon Hise, 22, Shawneetown. Hise was being questioned about a recent theft of guns from an Illinois store when he drew a pistol and forced Watters and Wood to drive him in a police car to the airport. All three entered the airport office and Hise asked Johnson if anyone could fly him to Chicago. Another airport employe told Hise the weather was too bad for a flight. But Hise demanded a flight anyway. Johnson picked up a can of dope thinner and attempted to throw it in Hise’s face. Hise

shot Johnson, Watters and Wood escaped in the police car. Hise sped away with other police in pursuit. He ran into a house and held 18-year-old Sue Storkman hostage for about 40 minutes before he surrendered. Hise was taken to Lawrence County Jail at Lawrenceville and later was moved to Gallatin County Jail.

Profitable Fluke * NEW YORK UPI — A fluke industrial accident led to the discovery of latex foam rubber, now widely used for mattresses, and many other applications. In 1928, says the Latex Foam Rubber Council, two British scientists were attempting to make improved tire cords by extruding liquid latex rubber through a tiny nozzle into a gelling solution. The nozzle popped off and a mass of rubber shot into the gelling agent. The rubber foamed because of the pressure, and then set into a soft, resilient, spongy mass. The scientists realized that latex foam rubber could have commercial applications, so they refined the process, patented it and created the world’s first modern foam cushioning material. A number of synthetic plastic foams have been invented since, but latex foam rubber still is the most popular cushioning material made.

WASHINGTON UPI — An Agriculture Department study shows that farmers can make money by operating recreational facilities, but they must plan carefully just as in any other business. The department’s Economic Research Service checked into the reasons for the success or failure of 12 types of outdoor recreation business. The researchers made a survey of 254 individual enterprises in New England, Ohio, South Carolina, Arkansas, Missouri and Oregon. ERS said some recreational enterprises such as children’s camps, minnow farms, shooting preserves, and dude ranches can support an operator and

•his family. But these businesses usually require the full-time efforts of at least one worker and an investment of more than $50,000, ERS pointed out. The agency said there are satisfactory returns in some part-time efforts such as operating picnic areas, campgrounds, vacation farms, hunting areas, and guide services, j Usually, these enterprises can be carried on in addition to farming. Most of them require a capital investment of less than $15,000, ERS said.

The price of pork is expected to go up and the per capita use of the meat is expected to shrink this year because there just aren’t as many pigs as - there were a year ago.

The Crop Reporting Board' South Dakota, Nebraska, and said the December - February' Kansas, pig crop in the 10 corn belt I states was 11,524,000 head,! down 8 per cent from the crop during the same months a year J earlier. The board said the number of hogs and pigs on com belt I farms as of March 1 totaled 37,799,000 head, down 8 per j cent from a year ago. The com belt states normally produce about 75 per cent of the nalion’s swine. The states are Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri,

One of Pat's favorite ways of entertaining at home is a hen party where the girls munch diet foods and help each other with hair-styling and make-up. Once in a while they splurge on a pizza, but Pat says the tries to keep away from fattening snacks.
