No Increases In Justices' Salary WASHINGTON UPI — The associate justices of the Supreme Gout apparently will have to make do for a while on their present $39,500 a year. And the chief justice had better adjust his standard of living to $40,000, which is what he will continue to draw for maybe another couple of years. A proposal to give each of them an extra $3,000 yearly came before the House Wednesday. The bill’s sponsors didn’t argue that the justices were having a hard time making the rent — the idea instead was to make up for the treatment Congress gave the court last year. Pay raise legislation enacted during 1964 passed out $7,500 increases to lawmakers, cabinet members and all federal judges except those at the top. All the high court got out of that bill was $4,500 per man. But the House Wednesday just wasn’t in a mood to apologize to the court. Member after member rose to hurl additional barbs at the justices, and in the end the pay raise was rejected on a 177 to 203 vote.
