2 Tht Daily Bannar, Graaneastla, Indiana Friday, March 19,1965 Editorial-Wise A Little Of This And That Thursday was a typical March day with snow flurries, sunshine, wind and cloudiness. Aa we have mentioned several times before, the “wait” and “walk” signals in the business district are still not working properly. Oh, well. Practically all of today s sex movies would have been banned by the censors 20 years ago or even 15 years ago. This time 20 years ago, the war with Nazi Germany and Adolf Hitler was rapidly nearing a climax. Now, 20 years later, we have been embroiled in a Korean War and currently Americans are fighting in South Viet Nam. World War I, which was to have ended all wars in 1918 seemingly was just a dress rehearsal for events to follow. Heres’ hoping that Spring is really “just around the corner.” A mess of old-fashioned greens would go good right now, wouldn’t they ? Perhaps, the youngsters have not given it too much thought, but school will be out in two more months.

Four Juveniles Under Arrest MUNCIE UPI — Muncie police were notified today that four juveniles arrested in Burlington, Iowa, had 15 wrist watches apparently taken in a $1,000 burglary of Stillman's Department Store here early Thursday. The juveniles were arrested by suspicious officers in a car apparently stolen in Muncie just before or after the burglary in which 22 wrist watches, 8 transistor radios and a quantity of coins from vending machines were stolen. Muncie police planned to go to Burlington today to take custody of the four youths. At first, the burglary was considered a professional job. Entrance was gained to the store by loosening bars imbedded in cement at a window on the second floor. Besires the missing merchandise and money, the store suffered damage from efforts to

pry open cash registers. Cloth- ‘ ing also was scattered about the store on every floor.

Sheinwold On Bridge Strange Coup Foils Defensive Maneuver By ALFRED SHEEVWOLD National Men's Team Champion Many years ago Ely Culbertson gave a certain bridge play the glamorous title "The Coup Without a Name.” Later bridge writers have called it the Scissors Coup because it cuts communication between the opponents. Neat enough, but I prefer old Ely’s sure feeling for the vivid phrase. East dealer Both sides vulnerable NORTH A A 10 V J973

West opens the three of diamonds, and East wins with the king. East returns his singleton club, expecting to take the first trump trick, lead a diamond to the queen and then defeat the contract by ruffing a club. South sees the plot, of course, and must foil it by cutting the communication between East and West. That is, he must prevent West from gaining the lead to give East a club ruff. The way to do this is to discard the remaining diamond from the dummy or from the South hand on some other suit. For obvious reasons this cannot be done by leading either trumps or clubs. South must try to use the spades. PLAYS SPADES After winning the club return at the second trick declarer must cash the ace and king of spades and lead the nine of spades. When West plays low, declarer discards dummy’s remaining diamond. East wins an unexpected spade trick but is robbed of a diamond trick in return. Moreover, he is robbed of the club ruff since West can never gain the lead. South can draw the trumps at leisure after executing his Coup Without a Name, and then run the clubs. South might get away with this coup even if West had the jack or queen of spades. When South cashes the top spades and leads the nine of spades it looks a though he intends to ruff in dummy. If West has a spade honor and fails to play it, South may achieve an impossible as well as nameless coup. DAILY QUESTION As dealer, you hold: spades, A, 10; hearts, J, 9, 7, 3; diamonds, J, 2; clubs, K, Q, 10, 7, 6. What do you say? Answer: Pass. You nave 11 points in high cards and 2 points for the two doubletons, a total of 13 points. This gives you an optional opening bid, but you refuse the option because your long suit is a minor and because too much of your strength is in the form of jacks. Change both jacks to low cards and give yourself the doubleton ace-queen of spades, and you would open the bidding with one club instead of passing.
