WASHINOTON UPI — The capacity to produea beef in the United States is up again this year, but the rate of increase among the beef-on-the-hoof “factories” is slowing down.

The gain in cattle numbers— from Jan. 1, 1964, to Jan. 1, 1965 — was barely 500,000 head, considerably smaller than the gain of 3 million head in 1963 and 3.7 million head in 1962. In fact, tthe gain was the smallest since 1959 when the upswing in the current cattle number cycle began. The total number of cattle and calves on farms and ranches Jan. 1 was 107.2 million head, compared with 106.7 million head a year earlier.

CHECKS UP ON SATELLITES—-This highly sensitive airborne antenna system, shown on the Manned Space Flight Network’s instrumented aircraft NASA 232, was developed at the Goddard Space Flight Center to monitor flights of satellites. It consists of a high-gain VHF beam-switching antenna array, an antenna tracking system, and telemetry and spacecraft voice receiving/recording equipment. The high sensitivity is achieved by the unique antenna, two rows of six crossed dipole elements on right side of the fuselage.

ANDOVER, Mass. (UPI) — Patrolman William F. Tammany’s hobby is sketching. Working from descriptions furnished by witnesses to crimes, he draws pictures of suspects.

It wa one of Tammany’s pencil sketches that led to the apprehension of an ex-convict who is now awaiting trial in the slaying of a filling station attendant.

The department said fed cattle prices may slide a little this spring if slaughter is above that of the winter. Output of fed beef is likely to be below a year earlier and prices are expected to remain well above the AprilJune. 1964. average. The department said hog prices are expected to average well above 1964 rates this summer when prices reach their seasonal peak.

Karl-Guenther von Hase, press spokesman for the Bonn government, confirmed that Birrenbach would resume the talks but he refused to answer questions about the mission.

West Germany cancelled its weapons contract with Israel in an attempt to persuade President Gamal Adbel Nasser of the United Arab Republic from drawing any closer to Communist East Germany.

The arms shipments were stopped after Nasser invited East German leader Walter Ulbricht to Egypt in the hopes that the East German leader would not be given official recognition. But Nasser rolled out the red carpet for Ulbricht and West Germany retaliated by opening diplomatic negotiations with Israel.
