New Compound Fights Cancer BLOOMINGTON UPI — A team of Indiana University chemists revealed today the development of four new chemi ical compounds which have proved to be effective against cancers of rats. The team, headed by Da John H. Billman, professor of j chemistry, said the chemicals were tested by the U.S. Public Health Service and were tried on rats infected wtih a rodent tumor frequently used in laboratory experiments. When the rats were treated with the new chemicals for 10 to 12 days the tumors vanished and no toxic effects on the rats were apparent, Billman said. Billman said the compounds must be tested on rats for longer periods to see if any adverse effects develop. He emphasized thta success against rat tumors does not guarantee that the compounds woud be effective against human cancers. The new compounds are combinations of hexahydro-pyrimi-dine with nitrogen mustard. Thousands of nitrogen mustard derivatives have been used in research on cancer but it is so toxic it is difficult to use without danger to the patient. Billman said his group added other chemical structures and believe the additions protected the normal tissues of animals against the toxic nitrogen mustard.
