N. Y. Printers Set Strike Date ' NEW YORK UPI — Printers employed by New York City’s seven major newspapers Sunday set the stage for a possible second strike in three years. The printers, members of Local 6 of the International Typographical Union (ITU), voted 1.978 to 28 to authorize a strike if a new contract agreement is not reached by March 30, expiration date of the present contract. Negotiations on a new pact with the Publishers Association
of New York City, which represents all but one of the city’s major daily newspapers, have been suspended. A printers’ union walkout in the winter of 1962-1963 lasted 114 days and shut down nine city newspapers. Bertra A. Powers, local 6 president, Sunday told members that automation was the key stumbling block in the contract talks. “We will no see one member cast on the slag pile in the name of progress,” he said.

CurlotuAy, Silver Lance — the largest peacetime Navy-Mlarine maneuvers ever held — parallelled the Vietnamese war in many respects. Battle plans for Silver Lance called for Marines to bolster the forces of Lancelot from attacking guerrillas from Merlin. The guerrillas were being supported by Modred. South Viet Nam, North Viet Nam and Red China bear a striking resemblance to Lancelot, Merlin and Modred. The purpose of the 18-day exercise, involving about 60 ships and 50,000 men, was to train Navy and Marine personnel — from admirals and generals to seamen and privates — in the type of warfare prevalent today throughout the world. Silver Lance began Feb. 23 when the first units of ships and men sailed from San Diego, Long Beach and San Francisco. They rendezvoused at sea, repelled enemy air - sea attacks and launched two assaults at this base about mid-way between Los Angels and San Diego.
Conduct Test Of Titan-2 Rocket
CAPE KENNEDY UPI — The countdown started today on a Titan-2 rocket and its Gemini spaceship for a mock launch that is a key step in preparations to orbit two astronauts as early as March 23. The seven-hour .countdown, which got underway 90 minutes late at 3:30 a. m., EST, will stop one minute short of engine ignition. The rocket was loaded with fuel for the full - scale launch rehearsal, but the devices needed to fire its engines were not aboard today. Astronauts Virgil L. Grissom and John W. Young are to climb into their bell - shaped Gemini capsule 100 minutes before the simulated launch after suiting up in a nearby trailer. The purpose of the drill was to prove that the 109-feet tall rocket - spacecraft combination is ready to make America’s first two-man spaceflight — a three - orbit, five - hour mission. If a detailed review of the test reveals no problems, sources close to the program said work will move ahead toward the March 23 launch date. The last big hurdle to be passed is a simulated flight scheduled for about March 17. It uses an abbreviated countdown but will check the rocket, capsule and the Gemini tracking network.

Hopeful News In Medicine
THE newborn infant sees at birth. The newborn infant hears at birth. These important facts have for a long time been unknown to science. Now it has been definitely established that infants can sec from the moment of birth. Dr. T. Berry Brazelton studied 86 newborn infants at Harvard U n i - versity and the Boston Lyingin Hospital beDr. Coleman fore coming to this important conclusion. The study has been substantiated at the Julius Stein Institute at the University of California. There it w r as found that the newborn child could see objects, and even follow moving ones. Another enlightening scientific report shows that the newborn can consistently respond to a clicking noise when tested, even within three minutes after birth. Evidence accumulated in almost 2,000 cases was obtained by studying the reaction of the eyes and the eyelids of infants when a loud sound was produced. It was interestingly noted that newborn premature babies seemed to be far less responsive than “full-term” babies. As infants grow to three, six and 12 months of age, the reaction to sounds gives vital clues to their hearing ability. The exact physical and mental condition of the newborn infant is an excellent guide to their normal development. The new and improved techniques for sight, sound and neurological testing of the newborn provides a great advantage in the earliest recognition and treatment of congenital or birth deficiencies.

Children born with heart defects frequently fail to develop physically at the same rate as ether children. Sometimes these “congenital cardiacs” fall three cr four years behind other children of the same age, in terms of physical development. Their intellectual attainments are not
affected.
Within six months after surgery for the correction of a heart defect, they catch up to the normal physical accomplishments of their age group. At the Johns Hopkins University, physicians are studying the reasons why life processes are speeded up so rapidly after a successful operation. They are pursuing the possibility that a vague and still undetermined hormone balance may be reestablished after corrective heart surgery.
