INDIANAPOLIS UPI—What should a mother say to her teen-aged son who has been beaten and kicked without provocation by a gang of boys of a different race than his? What words are there to be said in reply to his comment, muttered through swollen lips: “If I’d had a .38. things would have been different?” She could say to him that he was fortunate that a carload of young people who witnessed the incident following a high school basketball sectional game risked trouble by swerving toward the gang, pulling the injured boy into their car and taking him to a police squad car.

She could warn him that the progress of civilization has been slow and could be halted if the cancerous growth of lawlessness is allowed to multiply. She could say that those who take a gun and the law into their own hands with revengeful aim transgress against justice more than they buttress it. Prom far distant places have come interesting food custom*. Prom the Near East, for instance, the tradition of serving dishes seasoned with curry powder is a familiar one. This originated to cover up the flavors of poor meat, etc. Through the yeara this has been overcome and the spicing is now a specialty.

Why not treat your family to this foreign specialty during Lent in the form of a delicious Shrimp Curry. It’s made so easily

with the outstanding all-American short cut . . . canned condensed cream of celery soup. There’s no more perfect base for

tbis saucy good main dish.

To go along, rice shares the curry tradition. Its texture, color,

and flavor complements the flavorful curry.

Customarily a curry is served with an assortment of condiments to be sprinkled over. Our all-American version is no different. Here we suggest chopped hard-rooked egg, water-

melon pickle, and chopped peanuts.

Complete your menu with broiled grapefruit topped with

toa4tea coconut for dessert.

JERUSALEM, Israel UPI — Israel has asked the United States for direct military aid to counter an Arab arms buildup, informed sources said today. The request was believed made to the U. S. Ambassador at large W. Averell Harriman who ended five days of talks on the tense Middle East political situation with Israeli leaders Monday night. Harriman concluded his visit here just a day before Communist East German leader Walter Ulbricht wound up his controversial trip to the United Arab Republic. Ulbricht and U.A.R. President Gamal Abdel Nasser issued a joint communique Monday night with strong anti-Israel overtones.
