Editorial-Wise Let's Be True Sportsmen As the host school for the sectional high school basketball tournament starting Saturday, Greencastle fans, students and players will make a most favorable impression on visiting Putnam County folks by displaying the best type of sportsmanship at every session. Let us show these people that residents of this city believe in fair play and will applaud any outstanding performance by boys from the seven other schools competing in the tourney. In the Hoosier prep hardwood court sport, many adults sometimes forget that the boys on the playing floor are just boys and not college or professional players. The boys will be' out there trying their very best to win for their school and coach as well as their respective student groups. Each player on each team wants to win just as much as their rooting sections. Let us all, young and old, be good sports win or lose, and this will be something that our friends and neighbors over the county will not forget.

WASHINGTON UPI—Chairman Adam Clayton Powell met with members of the House Education and Labor Committee today in his drive to gain full approval of President Johnson’s $1.2 billion aid to

education program.

Powell put off until Saturday further votes on the program’s key section, a $1 billion provision to provide federal help to schools which serve children coming from poor families. The committee has already approved a controversial section which would allow $100 million for federal purchase of

and books for children in private the | and parochial as well as public

schools.

Still hanging were the poverty section and a proposal which would provide $100 million for the construction of shared time educational centers to be used by both public and parochial school students. A stumbling block to full approval of the bill came when GOP committee members said

SHOULD PASS 1 When East bids two spades, South should pass. He has told his story, and all further moves are up to North. If North is bold he will double two spades, sensing the misfit; but if North passes two spades the contract

will be badly damaged.

The defenders can take their high clubs and high diamonds and can ruff several times. The best defense will take the first eight tricks, defeating East by a three-trick margin. NorthSouth could thus be plus 800 or 300. Even the smaller figure would be much better than

losing 1,100 points.

It happens only at the bridge table, of course, but we wouldn’t need help from Washington if we had enough selfcontrol to stay out of trouble.

North had a sound opening bid, and he never thereafter opened his mouth except for an occasional groan, but he had no way of controlling his partner and no way of getting help from Washington.
