2 Th« Daily Bannar, Graancastla, Indiana Thursday, Fabruary 25,1965 Editorial-Wise Red Pow-Wow In Cairo Now that East German Communist Walter Ulbricht is in Cairo as the guest of United Arab Republic President Gamal Abdel Nasser, Western World leaders are probably wondering what these two mischief makers have in mind. Ulbricht's official visit has further strained Arab Republic and West German relations even before it began. Nasser and a delegation of Arab officials rolled out the red carpet for Ulbricht when he and his wife arrived by special train from Alexandria. It was noted, however, that Nasser smiled and greeted Ulbricht with a handshake instead of the embrace he usually gives visiting heads of state. Only a few of the diplomatic corps in Cairo were present. These included the ambassadors from Red China, Kuwait, Libya, Guinea, Tunisia, the Sudan and Indonesia. United Press International reported from Bonn that West Germany will cut off all economic aid to the U.A.R. because of the reception accorded the East German strongman. ^ Previous to his arrival in Cairo, Egyptian naval launches and Russian-built jet fighter planes escorted his East German vessel from international waters to the ancient port city of Alexandria. It looks as though the Reds are having a big powwow.

i Scores Pull-Out \ isters were being inadequately prepared to grapple with areas ' like East Harlem, said the | Church has two pat answers for avoiding such spots. “Boiled down, the first reason is that ‘they simply aren’t our kind of people,’ ”he said. He claimed that when ministers went into an area or development “they seine off’’ their own kind according to race, culture and background. What happens, he asked, to the “emerging, pagan sector—the great mass in the inner city?” “They aren't the kind of intellectuals on whom we pride ourselves,” he answered rhetorically. The church, Webber continued, also offers the argument that these people already are religious. “If they are Italian they are Catholic. If they are Negro they go to a big Negro church in Harlem. And so on. Relax, they tell you, everyone is taken care of.” The 1942 Harvard graduate and ex-seminary dean of students insisted everyone wasn’t taken care of. He maintained the Protestant church must find new forms to exist in the new secular world.

Local TEENS' VIEW By Janet Staub Do you believe in Voodooism? The term Voodoo is derived from the Dahomean (West African) vodun, meaning "spirit." In the United States, the term “voodoo (or hoodoo) often is used to mean any type of magic. Sheinwold On Bridge Invite Game In Major With Delayed Raise By Alfred Sheinwold National Men’s Team Champion When you open the bidding with one apade or one heart your partner is not allowed to bid two-and-a-half of your suit. Nevertheless he has a way of showing a hand that is too good for a single raise but not good enough for a double raise: He responds first in a suit of his own and later raises your suit. South dealer Both sides vulnerable NORTH 4 J 105 V Q5 2 O 932 * AK97 WEST EAST *9832 *6 84 V K7 109 0 AQ 7 O K8 5 4 * J 65 2 * Q 843 SOUTH * AKQ74 V A763 O J 10 6 * 10 South West North East 1 * Pass 2 * Pass 2 4k Pass 3 * All Pass Opening lead —- * 2 With only ten points in high cards and flat distribution, North might well have been satisfied with a raise from one spade to two spades. The actual North player thought that this would not do justice to his hand, so he showed his clubs first and raised spades later. South would have accepted the invitation if North had responded in diamonds, but the club response did not arouse South’s enthusiasm. South

therefore shrewdly decided to stop short at three spades. As it happened, South did not play as cautiously as he had bid it. He began well by taking the two clubs and discarding a diamond, but then he slipped from grace by drawing four rounds of trumps. BAD BREAK South ran into a bad break when he tried the hearts out. East got three heart tricks, and the defenders also took two diamonds. Down one. It was a grievous error to draw any trumps at all. After taking the top clubs South should cash the ace of hearts and lead a heart toward dummy’s queen. East wins with the king of hearts and returns a trump to dummy’s ten. South gives up another heart, and East puts his partner in with a diamond to return a second round of trumps. South wins and ruffs his last heart in dummy. This ruff assures the contract. Declarer would need good luck in hearts if he had bid game, but he needed only a heart ruff in dummy to make sure of nine tricks. The correct play of a hand depends not only on what cards you hold but also on how high you have bid. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with one heart, and the next player passes. You hold: Spade 6, Heart K J 10 9, Diamond K 8 5 4, Club Q 8 4 3. What do you say? Answer: Bid two diamonds (or two clubs). You have to raise hearts at your next turn, thus showing a hand too good for a raise to two hearts but not good enough for an immediate jump to three hearts.
