Humes Sets New ICC Scoring Record; Second Place Still Open

Zmlr

$!§i >%.

The Indiana Collegiate Conference's single season scoring record succumber to Evansville's brilliant junior Larry Humes Saturday night and an avalanche of others may follow as the champion Aces hope to continue their mopping up operations. The 6-4 Madison, Ind., wizard hit 30 points against Butler to established a new mark at 330, seven points above the old one set by St. Joseph’s Bob Williams in 12 games in 1959-60. Humes, who had a 68-point week in two games, still has another pair left — Valparaiso and Indiana State— to push the mark into an even higher orbit. Humes also has eclipsed Williams’ field goal record of 120 by 10. At least four more records are in certain jeopardy in the current race that has the second team, Ball State, five ames out of first and only one and one-half games out of last. Butler, though it’s tied for last (3-6) with St. Jce, is ironically winging its way to new ICC records in field goal and free throw marksmanship. The Bulldogs this week are the league's top field shooters (.516) and foul shooters (.769). Both are well ahead of prevailing ICC records. The 10-0 Aces need but 180 points in that field goals to put in a mark in this category. While Humes solidified his scoring position over second place Butch Wade of Indiana State, each of the three other

individual departments leaders managed to keep a grasp on their specialities. Jerry Sloan of Evansville upped his rebound edge to 13.9 per game, DePauw’s Stan Bahler is barely nosing out Valpo’a Steve Cook in field goal accuracy .626 to .623, and Mike Chapman, Butler center, nudged his free throw percentage to .913, 42 of 46 to stay ahead of Wade's .844. In team statistics Butler supplanted Evansville as the league's best shooters, .516 to .510 this week, and also grabbed team honors in foul shooting .769 and fewest personal fouls per game, 15.5. Evansville kept its place as the top scoring machine, 98.1 and beat rebounders, 49.2. Valparaiso salvaged the final team category, team defense, permitting its opponents an average of 76.1 per game. This week the conference’s six-team race for second place ! continues unaboted with every

squad still holding a mathematical chance to grab the red ribbon. Indiana State (4-5) hosts Butler (3-6) Wednesday night, Ball State (4-4) goes to St. Joseph’s (3-6) and Evansville (10-0) travels to Valparaiso (4-5) where the Crusaders are

aching to improve on an 83-78 entertains non - conference Wheaton Tuesday. Saturday’s light schedule puts Ball State at Butler, DePauw at Indiana State, Evansville at Ky. Wesleyan, Valparaiso at Air Force Academy and Aquinas at St. Joe.

Michigan Downs Indiana 96-95 By United Press International Indiana's basketball team should've learned something from Princeton last Christmas —never turn your back on Michigan for a minute, not even for 26 seconds. In last December’s Holiday Festival Tournament in New York, Princeton held a 14-point lead over Michigan with less than four minutes remaining in a semifinal game, only to lose at the buzzer after the Wolverines put on a great closing rally. Monday night, the Wolverines pulled off a similar rally, not i once, but twice in the same 1 game to defeat Indiana 96-95 in double overtime and maintain j its lead in the Big Ten Confer- j ence. Michigan, which is ranked No. 1 in the nation, trailed Indiana by seven points going into the final minute of play j and it appeared as though the! Hoosiers had the game tucked safely away.

NFL Convention Gets Underway PALM DESERT, Calif. UPI —The annual midwinter convention of the National Football League officially gets under way today with owners and coaches ready to discuss just about anything — e- ept the possibility of a truce in the draft war with the American Football League. Although the battle with the AFL is causing profits to shrink in both leagues, talks of a truce isn’t even on the agenda. “That doesn't mean it won’t de discussed,” said a league spokesman, “but the agenda doesn’t list any such proposal.” Television receipts have kept both leagues in sound financial shape as college graduates reap a harvest in bonus money. The tops, of course, was the $400,000 paid to Joe Namath to sign with the New York Jets of the AFL.

The Reelsville Indians made short work of their Saturday night guest, the Lizton Blazers, by grabbing a quick first quarter lead and refusing to ease up to roll over their opponents, 97-48. The Indians, paced by high scoring of hustling sophomore Joe Williams (who is considered one of the most highly improved ball player in the countty) jumped into a quick lead in the first period of action, and were never seriously threatened by the visiting Liz-

ton squad.

Williams paced the Indians with 36 points while Irwin and Batton dropped in 14 and 12 points respective 1 ;-. Smith led the Lizton squad with 23 points. The Indians, boasting a not-so-good 14-4 season record thus far, have only one scheduled game remaining before Sectional Tournament time, that being Emenience on the 19th.

DePauw Hosts Wheaton Net Tossers Tonight

Another band of Crusaders, this time from Wheaton College invades DePauw’s Bowman Gymnasium tonight at 8 p. m. when the visitors will be seeking their 13th victory in 19 games. The Illinois college knocked off the Tigers. 81-80, December 4 after surviving a last minute DePauw rush that nearly obliterated a 10-point deficit. While DePauw was dropping its fourth straight game, 92-68, to Valparaiso Saturday night, Wheaton extended its season mark to 12-6 by thrashing St. foseph's, 86-78.

A week before the Crusaders vanquished well regarded Portland University 94-73 in a Chicago Stadium doubleheader with Loyola and Miami (O.) At the bottom of the Wheaton success has been John Pfund, a 6-0 guard who averaged 21 points last year and is hitting at slightly over 20 a game this year. Pfund had 37 against Portland. Pfund’s tallish playmates are P 6 center Roger Weavers. 6-3 Charles Huibregtse and 6-4 Bill Provinse, both forwards, and 6-0 guard Kerry Otterby. Though Pfund in the only

Crusader over 10 points per game, six more are within a point of 10 and the team through 18 games is averaging above 83 points. Provinse and Roger Weavers are the visitor’s chief rebounders. Each has over 100. DePauw coach Elmer McCall expects to stick with his usual five starters — Stan Bahler, Morgan Everson, Dean Rush, Dan Schermer and Jack Hogan. The game, DePauw’s last home encounter until next Tuesday when it hosts Butler, will be broadcast by WGREFM.

Mikita Is Back In Thick Of Race MONTREAL UPI — Stan Mikita, the defending National Hockey League scoring champion from the Chicago Black Hawks who appeared destined to take a back seat to teammate Bobby Hull, suddenly is back in the thick of the race. Official NHL figures released today show the Czech-born center picked up four points with two goals and two assists last week, narrowing Hull’s lead to one point, 67-66. At one time, Mikita trailed the first-half scoring sensation by as many as 14 points. A six-game scoring slump followed by a knee injury has left Hull stalled in the points race.

New Times ST. LOUIS UPI — The St. Louis baseball Cardinals will begin all Saturday day games 15 minutes earlier, at 1:15 p. m. CST, and all Saturday night games one hour .rlier at 7 o’clock this season.
