Rural Consumers To Be Benefitted WASHINGTON UPI—Secretary of Agriculture Orville L. Freeman has calculated that more than two million rural consumers will benefit from electrification loans made in 1964 to electric distributors by the Rural Electrification Administration.
|
Freeman said loans also were approved by REA during 1964 to 10 power-type borrowers whose members serve more than 580,000 consumers in rural areas. REA telephone loans made in 1964 will benefit about a half million rural subscribers, Freeman said. Electrification loans last year totaled $434 million. The funds will finance initial service to about 173,000 new consumers and provide improved facilities for 1.9 million consumers already served by the 309 distri-
bution borrowers who received loans. Telephone loans in 1964 totaled $118.4 million. Freeman estimated the funds will finance new or improved service for about 127,000 rural subscribers. The loans also will benefit nearly 400,000 other subscribers already on the lines of the 1964 borrowers, Freeman said. Freeman said REA electric borrowers now serve power to 5,381,000 farm and other rural consumers in 46 states, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. REA-financed telephone systems now serve more than 1.6 million subscribers in 46 states. Since the REA began making electric loans in 1935, borrowings through 1964 totaled $5.477,280,428. Repayments have amounted to $2,157,017,793. More than 1.5 million miles of line have been put into service, and 98-1 per cent of the nation's farms have been electrified. In 1935, only 10.9 per cent of the farms had central electric service.
