South leads a diamond to dummy's jack, and you realize that declarer has four top diamonds. He takes the rest of his diamonds, and you must find two discards. What do you throw ? NEVER ADMIT IT If you would throw away two of your spades in actual play. never admit it. You need all four spades to stop the game. If you discard a spade, declarer takes his three top spades and dummy's eight of spades is good for declarer's ninth

trick.

Yoti should surely discard a club from the West hand on the j third diamond. You must play your partner for a high club l and some spade help, for it

South has the ace-king of clubs | or the ace of clubs and the j queen of spades he will have nine tricks in top cards. Your discard on the fourth diamond is a headache. You cannot be quite sure of the right play, but in the long run it pays to save all of your spades and throw almost anything

In a surprising number of hands your first duty as a defender is to save a stopper in declarer's or dummy’s long suit. If this forces you to unguard a side king or queen, partner will usually stop that

suit.

Hypochondriacs Need Help

THE hypochondriac, the chronic complainer about non-existing illness, may call forth impatience by his preoccupation with his own health. Yet his complaints must not be dismissed as an annoying burden that doesn’t deserve sympathetic understanding.

Hypochondriasis must be considered as an illness in itself. It does devitalize the individual. It does keep him from normal, productive activity. It

day living.

The disease of the hypochondriac centers around persistent concern about the state of emotional and physical health. Almost always there is no real bodily disease to substantiate

his fears.

Everyone Worries A Bit Everyone has a certain amount of concern about his health. This concern becomes more evident when, for a short while, an illness deprives him of the health he may have taken for granted. Special periods of emotional stress, business and financial worries, seem to make some people more conscious of insignificant complaints. Discomfort that would normally not be a source of concern suddenly takes on unreasonable sig-

nificance.

It’s Real To Him The hypochondriac.

chondriaca are unconsciously motivated by an awareness of various benefits to be gained by the imaginary symptoms

which to them are very real. Sympathy and attention are

often concentrated on the hypochondriac, even though there is repeated evidence that no real illness exists. Seeking refuge in the excuse of illness is often a reflection of an inability to

cope with life’s problems. Urge Psychological Help The hypochondriac must be

McNamara said in Washington that one of the American planes was shot down. North Viet Nam said four jets were downed. As expected, the strongest Communist reaction today came from Hanoi.

“Cost of electricity per kilo watt-hour for household and industrial use is now less than one/third of what it was 50 years ago. The cost of living during the same period of time has nearly tripled,” Blanchar pointed out. He also noted that the cost of electricity continues

te decline.

He pointed out that the electric industry has enjoyed spectacular growth in the same 50 years. ‘‘The industry has a total capacity of 222 million kilowatts today. Many of these patients pose a very difficult problem to their families and to their doctors. Physicians quickly recognize that the symptoms are truly distressing to a hypochondriac.

The right to the throne,

thing to remember is that glazed pots do not evaporate water through their sides as do clay ones. Therefore, they need less frequent watering and less at a time. Also, put a inch, or more of gravel in the bottom of each pot for a drainage area, a safety valve against over-wat-

ering.

Watering Tips When watering, try not to use cold water fresh from the pipe. It is noticeably colder than the air at all seasons and may shock some plants. Better fill your watering can immediately after watering and let it stand in the room until next time. By then, it will be room temperature. Also, if the water is heavily chlorinated, most of it will escape into the air while standing. Another point to bear in mind! the old advice about never letting water stand in drops on the leaves in the sun has been proved completely false. Water is not only a cooling agent and makes burning impossible but it cannot act like a magnifying glass. To bum. the lens would have to be held an inch or two away from the leaf, not on it. Temperature Factors Another factor is temperature.. The average house is on the warm side for most plants. But if it is allowed to cool down at least 10 degrees at night, the plants take it much better. Drafts are also important. Most plants do better if a little fresh air enters the house. But, don’t let it blow directly on the plants. Drafts or sudden temperature changes shock the plants. They are one of the chief causes of the red bracts falling from poinsettias. Do not let the soil get hard. Loosen it periodically with one of those small hand tools made especially for patio and indoor gardening. Finally, bear in mind that all plants must rest some time. They may not lose their leaves but growTh does stop. With many plants this is during the short days of winter. During such periods water less frequently and, if possible, put the plants into a lightly cooler

place.
