Photo by Ralph Taylor Miss Nancy Ann Lehe became the bride of David Lee Walbring at the First Baptist Church on Friday evening, January 29th. The Rev. Stanley D. Nicol officiated at the double ring ceremony, attended by the immediate families of the bride Auburn, Indiana, and Richard and groom. Miss Becky Raub of Cooper, Greencastle, were the

attendants.

-Essay Contest rivers and streams become polluted. Respect for rich resources must be continued by 1 all citizens or else we will lose valuable assets. Wildlife and forestation are part of the nation’s restoration program. Buffalo and eagles, and other wildlife creatures, which once were plentiful, are rapidly becoming almost ex-

tinct.

America is a wonderful place to live because people have discovered how to live as neighbors. Well educated teachers help boys and girls learn fundamentals of good citizenship, so that with knowledge and understanding we might learn the great lessons history teaches, and therefore, prepare us for our future life’s work. Club programs and community activities help stamp out juvenile delinquency in small towns and large cities. In this modern age of space ships and rockets, we must learn to become accustomed to the society of young and vigorous teenagers, who some day will have to deal with the foreign and domestic affairs of America. Do people consider themselves a Hoosier or a Buck-

of Mr. and Mrs. Paul D. Lehe, and David is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Walbring, all of Greencastle. A reception in the home of the bride’s parents

Or do we consider ourselves Americans, no matter which state is ours? Patrick Henry once said, “I am not a Virginian, but an American.” Here we enjoy freedoms — freedom of the press, of religion, of speech, of trial by jury. Thousands of our citizens have died

Editorial-Wise » , - > ‘ » Still Awaiting Information We asked our friend, City Street Commissioner Clyd# (Brick) Miller the other day if he could give us an estimate on the cost of removing the snow after the big storm on January 15-16. He said as soon as he received all the bills connected with this task he would give us the information we request-

ed.

So far, we have heard nothing from him regarding thif matter, but we are still waiting and hoping. We believe that information of this nature is of general interest to the residents of Greencastle. We know that several men and several trucks and other equipment is needed in work of this kind. Now, with Monday’s snowstorm, it still could be several days more before any data is forthcoming as Brick and his street force are a busy crew. Drag Racing West of City Coming from the west into Greencastle, on the Walnut Street Road, is a rather level strip of highway about a mile

in length.

When the weather is good, this stretch of road is the scene of drag racing mostly by teen-agers. This type of sport, if you want to call it that, is especially dangerous on Sunday when older folks are out driving. We might also comment that the scenery west of the city, in the Spring, Summer and Fall, is just as beautiful as that for which Brown County is famous. Should the road be straightened and a new bridge be erected over the New York Central Railroad tracks, the drag racers would have a much longer strip of pavement on which to compete. On the other hand, if this improvement should be done, the existing sharp curve and narrow bridge, would be eliminated and the present accident hazard would certainly be reduced, drag racers notwithstanding.

Ain't it The Truth!

All we can say this kind of weather is “Baby, it’s cold

outside!”

South’s double of one spade technically asked North to choose between the*two unbid suits. South intended to bid spades next in any case. When South did so. East doubled with great delight. East wouldn't have been so pleased if he had thought South knew what he was doing. Somehow many players are ready to credit their opponenta with boundless stupidity. When East did double two spades West should have run out; he knew that his opening bid was below standard in defensive strength. In delicate rescuing situations the nexthigher bid is usually clear. If West ran to two notrump he could not be showing general strength since with that sort of hand he would be delighted to accept the double of two spades. WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN It West ran to two notrump, East would bid three diamonds. South would subside, after being doubled at two spades, and East would comfortably make nine or ten tricks at diamonds. The play at two spades doubat two spades, and East would comfortably make nine or ten tricks at diamonds. The play at two spades doubled was less comfortable for East. After cashing the king of cluba West shifted to the ten of diamonds. East took the ace of diamonds and returned a club to make South ruff. Declarer led the king of spades, winning the trick, and entered dummy by finessing with the jack of hearts to return a apade through East. Eventually, East had to take his ace of trumps. Then a diamond return went to tha king, and South made his doubled contract with two overtricks for a score of 1,370 points. It dosen’t pay to open the bidding with a very light hand unless you can scramble to safety when the bidding takes an unexpected turn. DAILY QUESTION As dealer, you hold: Spade A 9 7 4 3. Heart 8, Diamond A Q J 9 6, Club 10 9. What do you aay ? Answer: Bid one spade. This is a light hand, but you have built-in safety with two good 5-card suits to bid.
