Editorial-Wise Indiana Is The Greatest! Indiana, in our opinion, is the greatest state in the Union, and we are proud to admit it to the world in general and to the nation in particular. No matter where you go, you always hear someone say that Hoosiers are most hospitable and so friendly. Incidentally, you can always tell a native Hoosier by just two words whether you are in the Deep South, the Far West, in the East or North. A real Hoosier most always will say 4 I reckon,” at sometime during a conversation with strangers or new acquaintances. Locally, we have been told by IBM Plant personnel, who come to this city, especially from the Eastern states, that residents of Greencastle welcomed them warmly and made them feel at home immediately after their arrival. Indiana with its fertile farms, its valleys, its woodlands, its state parks, its lakes, its streams and rivers is a fisherman and a hunter’s paradise. Then there are its many industries, large and small, and of course, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which is internationally famous for the greatest sporting spectacle in the world—the annual 500-mile auto race. It was m Indiana that Abraham Lincoln spent the formative years of his childhood. Other prominent men who have made Hoosier history in the past include Gen. Lew Wallace, author of Ben Hur and whose study in Crawfordsville is an interesting place to visit; James Whitcomb Riley, the poet; Booth Tarkington, Meredith Nicholson, George Barr McCutchan, Paul Dresser, George Ade, Theodore Dreisler and many, many
more.
As the late William Herschell once wrote, “Ain't God good to Indiana.” Yes, sir, folks, in spite of its snows, we still say Indiana is the greatest!

talking to myself. South took the ace of spades and returned the queen of diamonds to the king. Back came the singleton heart to the ace, and South continued with the jack of diafmonds to the ace. East cashed the king of spades and led a diamond for West to ruff with the nine. West cashed the king of hearts and continued with a heart, which East ruffed with the ace of trumps. By this time the defenders had taken six tricks, and West was still sure to get two trump tricks. South won only five tricks at his contract of three clubs doubled. HAD TO BID ”1 had to bid," South wailed. I had 17 points in high cards.” It was true, but those 17 points cost him 1,100 points on the scorepad. Me too, because I was North. Maybe that’s why I was muttering. An opponent's overbid seldom distresses me quite so much. Count your high-card points for offensive bidding, but not t for defensive bids. When an opponent has opened the bidding, count your playing tricks. If you bid for nine tricks, make 1 sure that you can win about seven tricks in your own hand even if the roof falls in. If you base your defensive bids on your high-card points, you will pay heavily for the privilege of free speech. Somewhere in the fine print of the Constitution there's a clause that says you're allowed to keep quiet when you have nothing worthwhile to say. DAILY QUESTION With both sides vulnerable, dealer bids one spade and you are next, holding: Spade A J. Heart A Q, Diamond Q J 10 7 3. Club Q J 8 3. What do you
say?.
Answer: Pass or bid one notrump. The diamond suit is not good enough for a defensive bid at the level of two (a good six-card suit is needed). If you do bid, make up your mind to keep quiet unless you hear from your partner.

Mrs. John Zeiner gave a report bn the council meeting. Mrs. Max West and Mrs. Crawford Burris will exhibit Crafts for our club Feb. 1st at the Community building. Our lesson “The Well Adjusted Child” was given by Mrs. Crawrford Burris. Mrs. Burris stressed the three ways of growing up which are: I. Adult Control where the parents are very authoritarian. Children may become very shy and cowering from this method. II. Child Control where children grow up in homes that are controlled by the child’s lightest w'him. Children need guidance. III. Democratic Control where there is consideration of each person. Every person, child or adult, has a right to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” The Goal of Discipline is self-discipline and the tool by whichwe help our children gradually grow is wise discipline. The meeting was adjourned w’ith the cldb prayer and refreshments were served by the hostess.

said. “We cannot permit the fact that we speak of billions to distract us from the opportunity to save thousands," he said. Branigin proposed a 51 million cut by limiting the milage allowance for travel in private cars to 8 cents from a recommended 10-cents. He said the state could save 5500,000 in two years that way. Branigin added that 5500,000 in two years also could be saved in publications and printing. “We should in my judgement do away with state-owned aircraft and we must see to it that public vehicles are used only for public purposes,” Branigin said. He recommended a cut of 58 million from the amounts proposed for state aid to public schools, and $8 million from the colleges’ and universities’ operating budget and $10 million from their construction budget.
