Those Were The Good Old Days (If you kept your heatth)
INDIANAPOLIS UPI—Gary Frobel’s high-flying Blue Devils today registered the nearest thing to a “clean sweep" in the UPI Indiana high school basketball coaches’ ratings this season. The Northwestern Conference leaders, No. 1 in the elite for the second week in a row, polled 17 of 19 first-place votes from the panel of experts for 187 points, just 3 short of a perfect score. They strengthened their hold on first place with an 84-69 victory over East Chicago Washington, the team they shared the loop lead with at the time. The only major change in the season’s fifth popularity poll was the addition of once-beaten Lebanon in ninth place, replacing South Bend Washington, which was demoted to Lebanon’s 11th spot despite its 71-65 victory at Goshen last Friday. Balloting was for games through last Saturday. Threee other quintets improved their state-wide status. Indianap o 1 i s Washing ton climbed from sixth place to second after winning the tough city tourney for the third year in a row. Gary Roosevelt moved up a notch, from fourth to third and Fort Wayne Central. 10th last week, regained its eighth
place. | At the same time, three oth- ’ er teams slipped. Anderson, upended by surburban Madison Heights Saturday night, 64-61, lost its runnerup spot but remained in the Big 10's upper bracket in fourth place. Indianapolis Manual, derailed by unheralded Wood in the city tourney, was dropped from third to sixth and Elwood from eighth to a tie for ninth with Lebanon despite its 79-67 weekend victory at Shelbyville. East Chicago's Senators remained fifth and Evansville Rex Mundi received the other first-place votes. Goshen and Spencer were brand - new additions to the “also-rans,” while Attucks and Tech of Indianapolis, Calumet, Elkhart, Highland, South Bend Riley, Madison, Lafayette Catholia and New Ross were dropped. The Breakdown The breakdown, with first places and total points: 1. Gary Frobel 17 187 2. Indianapolis Washington 132 3. Gary Roosevelt 116 4. Anderson 1 92 5. E. Chicago Washington 80 6. Indianapolis Manual 72 7. Evansville Rex Mundi 62 8. Fort Wayne Central 43 9. Elwood 1 and, Lebanon 42
An Apology In regards to a letter from an ! “interested” basketball fan we' would like to apologize for the ; neglect shown two fine sports-' men in a recent sports article. The high school athletes, Don Morris and Paul Walker, w r ho play for the Cloverdale Clovers (Putnam County Champs) gave excellent performances in the tourney as did all the high school athletes who participated in the event. We would also like to salute the county teams, coaches, and fans for their display of sportsmanship during the very successful tourney. Putnam County players and fans are noted for their excellent sportsmanship in high school athletics, let’s keep it that way!

Michigan Downs Spartans 103-98 For Michigan, ranked No. 2 nationally and leading the big Ten basketball atandinga, Tuesday night's game with intrastate rival Michigan State, conference basement, shaped up as a breather. It wasn’t. It took a 40-point effort by Cazzie Russell and an overtime period to dow-n the Spartans 103-98 on the Michigan State court at East Lansing. The Spartans almost pulled the upset of the year with their finest effort of the season. They worked the ball slowly, deliberately, waiting for the good shots. And they made them. During one stretch they outscored the mighty Wolverines 21-2. At halftime the upstarts from East Lansing held a 10-point lead, 43-33.
Wills "Steals" For A Living Maury Wills, who “steals” for a living, is one thief who is more concerned with the Internal Revenue Service than the police. That’s because Wills’ actual profession is baseball, a game at which he is so adept as to pocket 350,000 of Walter O’Malley’s hard earned money ev’ery summer. And although the smallish Los Angeles Dodger works hard for every penny, there’s not one rival pitcher or catcher in the National League who wouldn’t like to see the larcenous Willis behind bars.
