Lanky Girl Is Being Shortened OSWESTRY, England UPI— A 19 - year - old girl whose height is being reduced surgically from 6 feet inches to 6 feet 1 inch has had four mar- ; riage proposals from tall young men, it was reported. Ann Rowston has spent months in the Orthopedic Hospital here while doctors removed sections of bone from her legs to reduce her height. They plan similar operations to shorten her arms. Miss Rowston has received
more than 200 letters from well-wishers, including the four marriage proposals, since newspapers began following her case.
Dies In Tub
FORT WAYNE, Ind. UPI — Miss Louise Scihoppman, 80, was found dead in a bathtub j Tuesday at the Allen County Home where she lived. A cornor’s report said death was from drowning and probably was an accident. A nurse found Miss Schoppman in a tub with the water still running. Orderlies tried fruitlessly to revive her.
200,000th Patent WASHINGTON UPI — The U. S. Patent Office issued the 200,000th “design patent." A “dispensing container for tablets” became No. 200,000 in a 125-year-old line which includes — among other things— the Statue of Liberty, the TryIon and Perisphere from the 1939 New York World’s Fair, the Blue Eagle of New Deal days, and the zip-top beer can. Jack Williams and Howard Richards of Waukegan, 111., designed the tablet dispenser. They received the patent in a brief ceremony at Patent Commissioner Edward J. Brenner’s office.

Fight Shapes Up On Rule Change WASHINGTON UPI — Sen. Richard B. Russell, D-Ga., predicted that a liberal - sparked fight over easing the Senate’s ! filibuster rule could last several ! months. Russell made the forecast after getting solid support from his Southern colleagues to i fight, once more, any effort to
alter the cloture rule. The Georgia senator, leader of the Southern bloc, declined to predict his group would wage a filibuster but said “it might take considerable dnscussion” before the Senate can resolve the dispute.

Youth Sentenced FORT WAYNE, UPI — James D. Greene, 19, who hid in the organ loft of St. Patrick's Catholic Church for nearly a week after escaping from a courtroom during a burglarly hearing, was sentenced to two one-year terms in different Indiana penal institutions. Special Judge J. Byron Hayes in Allen Circuit Court sentenc- : ed Greene to a year in the reI formatory on a first-degree burglary charge and a year on
the state farm for the escape. Greene was caught in Chicago some time after he dashed away from authorities in the courtroom here and hid in the organ loft.
POISON OAK TOLL SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) — The leading single cause of occupational diseases in California is poison oak, according to the State Division of Industrial Safety. An average of nearly 800 workers annually are disabled by contact with the plant or its smoke when burned.
