Sheinwold On Bridge RECOGNIZE VILLAIN BY CARDS HE PLAYS

National Men’s Terim Champion In the old-fashioned melodrama you could always recognize the villian because he was the man who wore a mustache. Bridge would be easier if the same principle applied; as things are you have to think | to spot the villian.

slightly. Tire time had come to sort out the actors, an easy task for the declarer in this case. J. Lawrence Block, who played the South cards, could not have become the most successful realtor in Beverly Hills if he needed a mustache to recognize the villian. Block led a club from dummy and allowed East to hold the trick with the queen of clubs. East might do his best to look ugly, but he was no villian and could do no harm.

RETURNS TRUMPS East returned a trump, still hoping that declarer would slip. Block won. led a heart to dummy, and returned another club. When East played the king of clubs declarer once more played low from the South hand. This key play left East helpless. He returned a heart, but declarer won, drew the last trump, and cashed the ace of clubs. This set up the ten of clubs and assured the contract. South would go down if he took the ace of clubs too early. This would allow West, the villian of the piece, to gain the lead with the jack of clubs. West would lead a diamond, forcing South to ruff. East would then get a trump trick to defeat the contract. DAILY QUESTION You have opened the bidding with one spade, the next player has bid two diamonds, and this is passed around to you. Local Comment The walk-wait signs seems to be snarling up a lot of pedestrian traffic according to conversation overheard in a popular coffee break establishment. The biggest complaint is that the “walk” light is on for such a short time that after the "wait” sign appears the traffic light shows green. Just goes against the grain of what everyone has been taught about traffic sig-

nals.

Christmas comes but once a year. This comes as a relief to a lot of shoppers. How about those people who collect food baskets for the needy? Christmas should come more often. In this great land of ours, no one should go hungry.
