West takes two high clubs and then shifts to the nine of hearts. The problem is to avoid the loss of a heart and a diamond, since West’s solid club suit indicates that East has both missing kings. At first glance it seems to to take the ace of hearts and imn all of the trumps. South saves a heart and two diamonds in each hand .
East must likewise save two diamonds and one heart. South then leads a heart, forcing East to win and lead diamonds to dummy. Simple, isn’t it? The trouble is that a resourceful East should see this all coming. He should throw three low diamonds fairly early, with never a moan or a groan. When South leads the heart at the end, East takes two heart tricks and thus defeats the contract. SURE THING South should not put himself at East's mercy when he can make a sure thing of the hand. Declarer takes the ace of hearts at the third trick, ruffs a club to make sure that East is out of clubs, and draws three rounds of trumps, discarding the ten of diamonds form dummy. South then leads the nine of hearts and passes the trick around to East. If East returns a diamond, dummy gets a free finesse. If East returns a heart, dummy will get a trick with the queen of hearts. You don’t have to play the hand accurately if your opponents are so transparent that you always know when they discard down to a blank king. If your opponents are toujih or if you sometimes misguess what they are doing,
it pays to play the hand properly. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with 1 NT (16 to 18 pomts), and the next player passes. You hold: Spade 7, Heart K J 7 6 5 2, Diamond K 9 8 2, Club 10 5. What do you say? Answer: Bid four hearts. You can’t really tell what you can make, but in the long run it pays to bid game far more often than you go down.
Home Demonstration Club Met Dec. 17th Members of the Merry Jills Home Demonstration Club met at Torr's Restaurant on December 17 for their annual Christmas party. Each member received a winter corsage for a favor. After the ham and turkey dinner was served, everyone joined in playing Christmas games. Useful household gadgets were given as prizes. Norma Albin, the outgoing president, received a bracelet in appreciation of her work for the club. Gifts were presented to secret sisters, and a drawing was held to determine the names for 1965.

JOHNSON CITY, Tex. UPI —With the tree up, the candles lit. both daughters and one boyfriend gathered around, and four 16-year-old stockings hung by the fireplace, the Johnson family was all set today for Christmas on the LBJ Ranch. Lady Bird Johnson celebrated her 52nd birthday Tuesday overseeing the final yuletide preperations. The only problem she has left is finding the right spot for a favorite Christmas ornament, a handsome angel sent to her by a friend in Germany. The President gave Lady Bird a simple gold brooch as a birthday present. She opened ; her presents at breakfast.
