Only Two Votes Needed By Burch WASHINGTON UPI — Republican National Chairman Dean Burch, battling to hold his job, claims he already has lined up all but two of the votes he needs on the GOP National Committee. Burch met with newsmen briefly Monday after conferring with Sen. Barry M. Goldwater, Rep. William E. Miller and other Republican leaders at Goldwater's Washington apartment for most of the day. He said he “certainly hoped" he could survive a showdown over his chairmanship at the Jan. 22 national committee meeting in Chicago. He said he felt he had 65 of the 67 committee votes he needs to survive the ouster move, with another 15 to 30 votes “assailable.."

Barry Supporters Form New Group WASHINGTON UPI — A new organization to help conservatives win political office has been set up by a group of prominent figures, mostly supporters of Sen. Barry M. Gold-w-ater. Outgoing Rep. Donald C. Bruce, R-Ind., is chairman of the organization, the American Conservative Union (ACU). Bruce who has one of the most conservative voting records in Congress, did not seek re-election after an unsuccessful primary bid for a senate

seat.

Vice chairman of the 17-man board of directors is Rep. John M. As-hbrook, R-Ohio, and the secretary is Robert E. Bauman, director of the Young Americans for Freedom, which backed Goldwater in the presidential election.

Halleck Battles For Minority Post WASHINGTON UPI—Indiana’s Rep. Charles A. Halleck, on “old pro” with 30 years experience in the political wars, today came out battling against a drive to unseat him as House Republican leader. Applying the weapons at

hand, the 64-year-old Halleck was reported checking his bankroll of political credits and calling in old loans. Of these he has plenty outstanding, having done favors at one time or another for most of the 120 returning GOP members and for at least some of the 20 elected for the first time on Nov. 3. In addition, an associate said Halleck was considering naming as “assistant Republican leader” a popular member of the GOP group plotting to arrange Halleck’s replacement. Beneficiary of this move would be Rep. Melvin R. Laird, R-Wis. The intended victim would be Rep. Gerald R. Ford, R-Mich., the 51-year-old “new face” candidate tapped by the conspirators to take Halleck’s job. Some members believe Laird’s elevation to a new post in the GOP would take much of the steam out of Ford's drive against Halleck. Laird and Ford are close friends. Laird was not available for comment on the report he might be offered a post on the Halleck team. Neither was Halleck, who has confined his public statement to the fact that he is running for re-election and figures to win on his record. Miner Rescued After Cave-In WILKES-BARRE ,Pa. UPI —The body of one miner was found today after another was which had trapped them 200 feet underground in an anthracite mine. Rescue crews, endangered by constant threat or additional rock falls in the mountainside mine, freed Peter Byczkowski, 54, of nearby Plymouth, from the mine slope Monday night, 10 hours after the first cave-in occurred, Byczkowski was taken to the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital for treatment of a leg fracture and exposure. The hospital said his condition was “fair." Two hours after bringing Byczkowski to the surface, the rescue crews located the body of his brother-in-law, Lawrence Melacheski, 37, also of Plymouth, nearly buried in the tons of rock and coal which

fell from the roof of the mine passage.
