Sheinwold On Bridge Virtue Is Rewarding After Correct Play By Alfred Sheinwold National Men’s Team Champion Man is the animal that thinks, and the best man is the one who makes others think. That’s why South's best play is so appealing in today's hand; it shows what a fine man South is. East would sense that South has the king of hearts. East would win with the ace of hearts and might switch to a low spade. This play defeats the contract. South must develop the clubs to make nine tricks, but West takes the king of clubs and leads another spade. East thereupon takes three spade tricks, defeating the contract. If South is a fine, unselfish character he plays the jack of hea^s from the dummy at the first trick. This may give East the impression that his partner has the king of hearts and that a heart return is the best defense. MAKES CONTRACT South makes the contract with a heart return. He cas develop the clubs and make sure of three clubs, four diamonds and two hearts even if he never gets a spade trick. Of course this will not happen if East thinks carefully about that first trick. East will see that South has the king of hearts because he would not bid
one notrump without a single high card in spades or hearts. If East thinks, he will defeat the contract. If East is too lazy to think. South will make his contract.
Little opposition was expected. A 6,100-man international force of nine countries, supported by voluntary contributions, has been trying to keep feuding Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots from killing each other for the past nine months. Secretary General Thant, re-

Suspect Sought In UN Incident NEW YORK UPI — Police today were searching for a tall, swarthy man suspected of firing a shell at the United nations headquarters last week. Shortly before the shot was fired he was seen “acting nervously” one block from a waterfront lot where a rocket launcher was found. A police sketch and description have been distributed to all police commands, a number of i federal agencies and United Nations security forces. Chief of Detectives Philip Wash said Thursday the man was seen walking back and forth, pacing nervously and frequently glancing at his watch. Walsh said, “from this, we have the suggestion that he could have been involved and was waiting for this thing to
blow.”
The shell was fired at the U. N. headquarters from across the East River. It landed short and exploded in the water.
Disagreeing with observations that Halleck had quelled any attempt to oust him at the next party caucus on Jan. 4, two Republican congressmen predicted that Ford would win if
he challenged Halleck.

Burch Says He Can Hold Post WASHINGTON UPI — GOP National Chairman Dean Burch, back from a strategy meeting with Sen. Barry M. Goldwater, says he has enough party support to keep his job. Burch returned Thursday from a meeting in Phoenix with Goldwater, who picked the 38-year-old attorney for the top party post after receiving the Republican presidential nomination. The chairman told newsmen “Ive had a survey made and it shows I have enough votes. He added quickly, however, that he wishes he had more. The national committee meets in Chicago Jan. 22-23, and the key issue is expected to be a move by party moderates to oust Burch. He needs 67 of the 132 votes to beat down the move Burch declined to estimate hom many votes he could count on, saying only that he was sure of support for more than 50 per cent of the committeemen.
