Italy To Have New Presidnt ROME TJPI — Parliament votes today to elect a new Italian president. The choice may be dictated by Communist lawmakers. The election is seen as a serious test for Premier Aldo Moro's shaky center-left coali-

tion government. The voting was thrown into parliament when Antonio Segni, 73, resigned Dec. 6. He suffered a stroke four months ago. The man elected to succeed Segni will serve a full seven- : year term in the largely ceremonial office. The coalition failed to agree on a presidential candidate after days of intense bargaining. Mbro and his Christian Demo- ; cratic party nominated former

Premier Givoanni Leone. The other members of the coalition — Socialists, Social Democrats and Republicans — named Giuseppe Saragat. A Social Democrat, Saragat is Moro's foreign minister. The 253 Comunist members of parliament are expected to vote for the candidate they least dislike — possibly Saragat. Other candidates with a chance include former Premier

icy advocated by the United States and the bulk of the ali liance.

By JOAN O’SULLIVAN This is the season of the year When we're all on Christmas 41ert! The signal is the doorbell. When it rings, one thing is sure — ready or not — company's coming! I' It's no problem at all if you rc set up to serve them refreshments. Beep It Set I handle the problem by keeping a table informally set for Qie self-service of coffee and cake or a sweet treat of some sort. The table looks gay. arranged with paper plates and cups tbat have a snowman design matching a stand-up honeycomb paper snowman centergjece. As for coffee, there's no need ot keep it perking on the stove night and day. Using a new in-stant-brewing coffee- maker, you can have the steaming cup ready in a grand total of 7 minutes. Magical Coffee-Maker How does this magical and speedy coffee-maker work? Easily. Both boiling water and regular grind coffee are added to the container, a plunger is pushed down, moving grounds to the bottom of the pot, and —-zingo!—you’re ready to pour. " The maker really turns out a delicious cup of coffee and the same pot can provide both mild and extra strong. Push the plunger down quickly for the BDild brew. Serve it. Lift the plunger and drop it again for stronger coffee. What to serve with coffee? Here are tw r o of my favorite sweet treats. Mocha Mold and Peach Butterscotch Gateau. MOCHA MOLD ! 2 tbsp. unflavored gelatin 3 c. strong hot coffee 1 pt. chocolate ice cream 1 tsp. vanilla 1 c. chopped nuts Dissolve gelatin in hot coffee. Chill until slightly thickened: add ice cream, beating until smooth. Fold in vanilla and nuts. Turn in to 8-in. ring mold.

Amintore Fanfani and Giulio Pa.store, minister for southern Italy. Today’s initial balloting is expected to be inconclusive with none of the candidates rei ceiving the required two-thirds majority of the 963 votes. After two rounds of balloting, a simple majority will elect.

NATO Planners Fail To Agree PARIS UPI -NATO planners have failed to agree on a joint military strategy for Western response to a potential Commui mst attack, authoritative sources said today. Efforts to compose differences between French and American defense concepts for the aldiance have ended in a deadlock. NATO planners have reported this to the NATO ministerial conference being held here. The political rift ui the alliance has not basically affected its military might. NATO's military men feel the defense shield is generally in good shape, although it needs streng-

thening in the nuclear sector. But the political differences, spotlighted by France's go-it-alone policy, have cast their shadow 7 over the alliance's basic strategy — how to use its military might. There is now no agreed strategy for NATO—which could prove dangerous to the extreme i in the event of an emergency, the sources said. The problem facing the alliance is whether to meet a Communist attack once it occurs with conventional weapons in the first instance and to utilize the nuclear deterrent only in the last resort.
