Sheinwold On Bridge Short Trump Suit Calls For Caution By Alfred Sheinwold National Men’s Team Champion Good bidders try to find a trump suit in which the partnership has a safe majority. South had a safe diamond suit but could not win eleven tricks at diamonds. He decided to try for ten tricks as spades despite the trump shortness. The defenders took their two clubs and continued with a third club, forcing South to ruff. Declarer could not afford to discard on the third since he would then have to lose the setting trick to a trump. South continued with the king and ace of trumps. This left a small trump in dummy and the queen in South’s hand, with two trumps still out. If South tried to draw the two trumps with his queen.
