His own cure of the disease benefitted others at a hospital he established in the Adirondack Mountains. The Christmas Seal was first placed on sale in Denmark in 1904 and did not reach the United States until 1907. Emily Bissell organized the program in the United States and the first sales took place in Wilmington, Delaware, and Philadelphia. Leigh Mitchell Hodges undertook the editing of the U. S. program. Since then the Christmas Seal crusade has been supported by the government, religious and other organizations.
