Sheinwold On Bridge Untruthful Signal Defeats Contract By Alfred Sheinwold National Men’s Team Champion Many a bridge player lies awake at night when the game is over, but the good player knows how to lie while the game is going on. A truthful East would play the deuce of hearts first and the seven of hearts next. West would shift to a club, and declarer would take two trump finesses through East’s king. East would not get a trump trick, and South would score game and rubber. Still, East would be able to comfort himself with the thought that he told the truth. Who could ask for more than that? U. S. Presses For Federal Hearing MERIDIAN, Miss. UPI — The federal government pressed today for an immediate federal grand jury hearing of evidence, including an alleged confession, against 21 white men arrested in the slaying of three civil rights workers. U. S. Commissioner Esther Carter shocked the Justice Department Thursday by throwing out the confession as heresay evidence and dismissing the federal civil rights charges against 19 of the men. After the story hearing Thursday, two of the arrested suspects, Neshoba County Sheriff Lawrence Rainey and Deputy Cecil Price, left the courthouse chatting and joking with friends. But they gave terse “no comments” to news-

men.

FBI agent Henry Flask of Atlanta told Miss Carter the FBI obtained the reported confession after six months of thorough investigation of the killing of the two white youths and the Negro near Philadelphia, Miss., last June. Rask said agents covered hundreds of miles of back country roads during the questioning of more than 1,000 persons.

WASHINGTON U P I — A member of the Senate Rules Committee disclosed today that secret FBI files on a mysterious German beauty contained no evidence of government security leaks or “party girls” to win legislative favors. Sen. John Sherman Cooper, R-Ky., said in an interview that “there wasn’t anything in there to indicate that the activities of women were used to influence legislative matters .... there were no violations of security

I

His comments seemed to downgrade persistent suspicions of a high-level sex-and-security scandal which have arisen from testimony in the far-ranging Bobby Baker investigation. The name of Mrs. Ellen Rometsch has cropped up many times. She was returned to West Germany more than a year ago. FBI reports came after the rules committee made public a four-page statement Thursday summarizing actions taken to decide the future course of its long - running Baker investigation. The committee decided to continue the inquiry into the new year, and to call former White House aide Walter W. Jenkins “at an appropriate I time.” This virtually assured I that the Baker case would be a politically explosive issue in the new Congress. The decision to seek testimony from Jenkins was taken despite a letter from a psychiatrist who strongly recommended that Jenkins "not appear at committee hearings or questioning.”

I

Jenkins, a top aide to President Johnson, resigned his post in October after it was disclosed he had been arrested twice on morals charges. He was hospitalized for a time for treatment of high blood pressure and exhaustion. These decisions were taken in a four-hour closed committee session Wednesday.
