Demo Solon Opposes New Farm Legislation
PHILADELPHIA U PI — Chairman Allen J. Ellender, DLa., of the Senate Agriculture Committee served notice he will oppose much of the new farm legislation the Johnson administration is expected to sponsor in 1965. Ellender said he “a g r e e s
wholeheartedly that government interference in agriculture should be kept to a minimum. But if the government is called on to support the price of any agricultural commodity, then the government should be protected from excessive costs.” Ellender added, however, that
fhe thinks the administration’s | current wheat program is work- * ing well and will be continued. He said Congress will make a broad review of all farm programs in 1965 since many major crop programs are scheduled to expire next year. The Senate farm leader spoke here to the 46th annual convention of the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF). Pehnsylvania Gov. William W. Scranton, contender for the 1964 Republican presidential nomination, took his own turn at laying down an outline for national farm policy in another spech to the convention today. Scranton called for a grad-
ual movement away from government controls in agriculture, but added this does not mean overnight cancellation of all farm price supports. “The thing to do is to avoid further controls and gradually begin to remove government activity over ... a long period of time," he said.
Many Dropouts Voted In 1960 WASHINGTON UPI — An Agriculture Department analysis of the factors affecting school attendance shows that
more than one-fourth of the nation’s youth between 16 and 24 were school dropouts in 1960. The department's Economic Research Service based its study on data derived from the 1960 general census. ERS said the dropout rate was higher among rural than among urban youngsters. The dropout rate was higher for both farm and non-farm areas among the non-white than among the white school age population. ERS said the rates were 48 per cent for American Indians, 44 per cent for Negroes. 25 per cent for native whites, and less than 10
per cent for youths of Japanese and Chinese heritage.
Penn's Appeal Becomes troded By United Press Irternotienal From Juan D. Peron’s unsuccessful attempt to stage a return to Argentina, two facts seemed to emerge. The Argen- ' tine people just don’t seem to ! care very much anymore. And neither, apparently, does Peron. For 10 years, from 1945 until 1955, the dictator Peron dominated all phases of Argentine life. But for most of the last
10 years, he has been in e*ile ' Time has eroded his appeal. When Peron abandoned the comfortable life of Madrid and headed for Buenos Aires via Rio de Janeiro, it abstensibly was to carry out a promise that he would return to Argentina this year. But now there are those who say that at the age of 69. Peron had no intention of making more than a gesture. It is said he knew Brazilian authorities would stop him in Rio, and that, besides, he had no stomach for the possibility that in Argentina he would have to stand trial on charges ranging from rape to treason. But, if not for himself then
for others. Peron's quick roundtrip Atlantic flight created new problems. Despite Peron's long absence, a large bloc of Argentine labor remained loyal to him. Its members were concentrated in “The 62 ”, the Peronists unions within Argentina's Confederation of Labor. And among them the recriminations already have started. Accompanying Peron on the airliner from Madrid were Andres Fraimna, extreme left-wing leader of the Textile Workers Union, and Augusto Vendor, head of the 239.000-member Metalworkers Union.
