In hopes that the doctor wouldn’t be there . . . This comforting Happy Christmas wish, adapted from Clement Clarke Moore’s famous poem, can be a reality if simple ? safety precau- | t i o n s are ob- | served by every family this
| Christmas. Although Fire
D e p a r tments and community groups each year issue warnDr. Coleman ings about the potential fire hazard of Christmas trees, the | unhappy record of tragic fires as the result of improper handling of Christmas trees continues to be a serious threat to
safety and life.
Specific Safety Rule. The head of every family should be aware of the specific rules that must be adhered to if the Christmas tree is to be a thing of beauty, not tragedy. Following are some suggestions that can help you protect your family from the danger of a Christmas tree fire: 1. Small trees are generally less hazardous than large ones. 2. Wait until just before Christmas to set up your tree. If you buy early, keep the tree outdoors until ready to set up, so that it will not dry out. Set Tree In Water 3. Set the tree in water, in a cool part of the room and away from the fireplace or radiator. 4. Be sure that the tree is securely fixed to the base so that it will not topple. 5. Check all electric outlets and wiring on your string of
lights. If the wiring is frayed or worn, discard the set of lights. This precaution cannot be overemphasized. Make aure that any lights you purchase have the safety seal of the Underwriters Laboratories (UL). 6. Turn off the tree lights if you are not going to be at home. Use Fireproof Ornaments 7. Use only fireproof ornaments to decorate your tree, preferably made of metal or glass. If decorations are made of fabric or paper, make sure that they are flameproof. 8. If needles near lights seem to be turning brown, rearrange the lights. 9. Remember that dried trees are inflammable. If you notice that needles are beginning to fall, you should dispose of the tree at once. 10. When the gifts are unwrapped, gather up scattered paper and decorations and discard them properly and quickly. Select Safe Toys Make this a safe and happy Christmas for you and your family. Take these sensible precautions to avoid the possibility of fire. When you select gifts for your children, avoid the dangerous "weapons”—toys that may injure them, especially if carelessly handled in the excitement of Christmas Day. Let the day be a happy one for all of you, and for your doctor, too. Make it a REAL Merry Christmas to all. These columns are designed to relieve your fears about health through a better understanding of your mind and body. All the hopeful neio advances in medicine reported here are known to doctors everywhere. Your individual medical problems should be handled by your own doctor. He knows you best.
