THEN and NOW
[coffee brewing!-
Ever since coffee was first reported in Arabia more than 1.000 years ago, the search for the best way to brew it has gone on. For hundreds of years it was simply boiled, with bitter results. Then, in 1800, the first percolator was invented, by the Frenchman De Belloy. This was really the first “drip” pot, and it simply filtered boiling
water through ground coffee.
Another Frenchman, Durant, put the “perk" in percolator 27 years later when he patented a device with an inner tube to raise the boiling water and spray it repeatedly over the coffee. However, it was not until 1876 that ^ America took a percolator to its heart It was tne pumping percolator brought out by New Eng-
lander John Bowman.

he latest in the long line of boil, "ten Perk, drip, vacuum, filter and steep coffee makers is the new InstaBrewer. Using a unique pressureplunger method, it makes superb coffee in less than a minute using the regular grind of your favorite brand. All you do is use one coffee measure per cup, add boiling water, brew for 30 seconds to 1V6 minutes, then push the plunger to the bottom. The brewing action is exit off, and coffee is ready to serve. .if

Sheinwold On Bridge Super-Cautious Play Proves Very Costly By Alfred Sheinwold National Men’s Team Champion “The wicked flee when no! man pursueth,” Charlie Lederer remarked to me the other day in the middle of a bridge hand. Lederer played the king of clubs from dummy, and I ruffed. I returned the three of diamonds in the hope of limiting declarer’s entries to dummy. Declerer won in dummy, cashed the queen of spades and led another spade toward his hand. This is where I made the super-cautious mistake of putting up the nine of spades to make sure of forcing out declarer’s king. As Lederer later pointed out with his Biblical quotation, he had not intended to finesse with the eight of spades if I had played a low trump. I had fled when nobody pursued me. BAD BREAK REVEALED When West discarded a club the cat was out of the bag. Lederer knew that he had to organize a trump coup to pick up my jack of trumps. Declarer led a heart and continued the suit when I refused the first trick. I took the second heart and returned another diamond. Lederer won in dummy, ruffed a good heart, and got back to dummy with a diamond. With the stage set for the coup, Lederer led dummy’s last heart and discarded the king of diamonds. This left him in dummy with two trumps behind my two trumps. No matter which trump I played, he was ready to over-ruff. It’s worth noticing that declarer had to ruff once to bring about the end position, but he had to ruff a heart. If he ruffed dummy’s remaining club, I would hasten to discard a diamond and declarer would be unable to get back to dummy for the final trumpless trump
finesse.
“The Devil can cite Scripture for his purpose,” I reminded Lederer as he added up the score, but my heart wasn’t in it. A trump coup is a pretty sight even when it is executed against you. This is a borderline hand. It would be a sure open- ' ing bid if you changed a small spade or diamond to the jack or even if you put the two tens in the long suits instead of in | the short suits.

A Hospital Is Not A Hotel
Mr. and Airs. Andrew Jeppe, who were held hostage by the seven escapees, are shown after being released unharmed.
WHEN a patient begins to complain about the food, the
cold coffee, the soggy toast, the
telephone service and the 7 A.M. temperature reading, it is said that that he is quickly approaching recovery and discharge from the hospital. Though there is no real
scientific basis for this sage and astute observation, it has been the experience o f physicians and surgeons everywhere that

of an early return to health.
When a patient first enters a hospital, he is usually sufficiently ill or uncomfortable so that medical care is his only concern. Upon admission, there is a concentrated effort by a team of doctors, nurses and laboratory technicians to accumulate all the scientific evidence for diagnosis and treatment as quickly as possible.
