Negro Elected To Church Post ATLANTA UPI — Dr. Harry V. Richardson, president of A t 1 a n t a’ s Interdenominational Theological Center, was elected president of the Georgia Council of Churches Tuesday, the first Negro to hold the position. The council also called on its representative churches to actively oppose the distribution of hate literature and the distortion of facts by individuals and organizations that “are fomenting prejudice and creating distrust to an alarming degree.” Richardson moved up to the presidency from the first vice presidency and succeeds the Rev. James H. Lightbourne Jr. of Atlanta. The resolution, adopted by the council at its meeting at the Covenant Presbyterian Church, said the practices of hate groups “stand under the judgment of God and deny the Christian concept that 'the truth shall make you free.’ ” The council urged its ninedenomination membership to “secure accurate facts concerning the issues of our time.” The council also commended Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., on his winning the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize.

The official line here was that Wilson’s strong statement in Parliament was designed merely to calm left-wing opposition in his Labor party while, at the same time, putting him in a better tactical position for bargaining with the United

States.

Officials said they still expected Wilson to come up with a compromise formula when he arrives here for his Dec. 7-8 talks with President Johnson. Some diplomats stationed here believed, however, that the United States were merely fighting a gallant rear-guard action which it knew was doomed to failure. They said the Johnson administration could

subsequently point out it had share in nuclear strategy but tried to give its Allies a greater because of differences

among them.
