East captured the king of hearts with the ace and returned a trump, hoping to stop club ruffs in the dummy. East could not afford to step up with the ace since that would give declarer three easy diamond tricks. When East played low, South got to his hand with the queen of diamonds to ruff his last club in dummy. He continued with the queen of hearts, a heart ruff, and then drew West’s last trump. OUT OF TRUMPS By this time South was out of trumps, but he was in luck. East had nothing but diamonds so could not stop declarer from setting up one more trick to fulfill his contract. South was lucky to make his contract since East had the ace of diamonds but only four clubs and only three hearts. But none of this was a surprise to East. It was natural for South to play as he did, and East could see that the play would work. East can defeat the contract by making the right play at the second trick. South is marked with Q-x-x of diamonds for his bid of three notrump, which means that west has only tw'o diamonds. East should therefore lead a low diamond after taking the first trick with the ace of hearts.
