Shainwold On Bridge Never Send To Know For Whom Bells Toll By Alfred Sheinwold National Men’s Team Champion Your first step toward the solution of a problem is to know that you have a problem. No bell rings to tell you this when you are playing a bridge hand. If you play it right nevertheless, you have earned a no-bell
prize.

Opening lead — * J South won the first trick with the jack of spades and returned a diamond to the ace. East returned the three of spades, South played low, and West won with the eight. West now returned the king of spades to force out the ace. South had to lead diamonds again in the hope of making his ninth trick, whereupon West took the king of diamonds and the rest of the spades to defeat the cotract. South should work out West’s exact spade holdings from the fact that he has three spades higher than the six. South should also expect the top diamonds to be divided since if West had both he would have opened the bidding. This is all the Information South needs to play the hand properly. REFUSES TRICK South refuses the first trick, allowing East to win with the ten. East returns the low spade, and South's nine drives out the queen. If West continues with a spade. South wins with the jack. (Any other defense gives South all the time he needs to develop the diamonds.) After winning the third spade with the jack. South leads a diamond. If East wins, he cannot lead a spade, thanks to the hold-up at the first trick. T f West wins, he can set up his spades but can never get back to cash them. The defenders can get two diamonds, but nothing else. But South can play the hand properly only if he hears the bell toll and knows that it tolls for him. DAILY QUESTION Partner opens with 1 NT (16 to 18 points), and the next player passes. You hold: Spade K Q 8 6 5. Heart Q 5 4. Diamond K 3 2, Club 6 3. What do you
say?
Answer: Bid three spades. Since you have 10 points you know that the combined total is at least the 26 points needed for game. You want partner to raise to four spades if he has three or four spades: otherwise, he should bid three notrump.
IN MEMORY In loving memory of Oscar R. Daniel, who passed away one year ago, November 13, 1963. I often sit and think of you and the way you died You never said goodbye Before you closed your eyes. The blow was hard, the shock severe I never realized death was so near. And only those who have lost can tell The pain of parting without farewell. I laid you to rest up there on the hill I have you no more, that was God’s will. You left in my heart a great empty space And no one on earth can take your place. Sadly missed by wife, Edith Daniel and sons, Rodney Daniel and Duane Daniel.

Johnson Hosts Mexican Leader JOHNSON CITY, Tex. UPI— President Johnson and the president elect of Mexico today were expected to take up the thorny question of Mexico’s diplomatic relations with Cuba. Thus far in the informal talks between the two leaders, no mention of Cuba has been made. Mexico’s position has been that the choice of government is a job for the people of the country and to shut off diplomatic relations would be interfering in the other government’s internal affairs. Recently however, there have been a few Mexican leaders objecting to this stand. Mexico is the only nation in Latin America that still maintains diplomatic relations with Cuba. U. S. Secretary of State Dean Rusk said two days ago he believed the subject would come up before President elect Gustavo Diaz Ordaz returns to Mexico at 3 p.m. EST today. Johnson and Diaz Ordaz Thursday searched for a common, neighborly approach to trade, the problem of water salinity in the Colorado River and the Alliance For Progress. But Johnosn put the accent on the deprived people of both nations in remarks at a barbecue at the LBJ Ranch in Diaz Ordaz’ honor. “ . . . We are meeting here to talk together and to work together, and to take up arms together against the ancient enemies of mankind—disease and poverty and hunger and ignorance.” "As Mexico becomes stronger and wealthier,” and said, "Mexico wil be able to help others just as Mexico is helping others toda yin Central America. “For the Alliance is not just governments: It is the will and teh desrie nad the noble ambition of people—people who give opportunity and incentive, and they can make this Western Hemisphere and, indeed, they can make the entire world, a better, a healthier, a more peaceful and a much safer place to live in.”
