Barry Defeated By News Media WASHINGTON UPI — Sen. Strom Thurmond, R-S. C., blames the nation's news media for the defeat of Sen. Barry M. Goldwater. He says Goldwater would have won the presidency if it weren’t for slanted reporting by the biggest news media. The senator first made the charge in South Carolina, then expanded on his views in an interview with UPI here before leaving on an overseas tour. Thurmond, who switched to the Republican party after Goldwater's nomination, also vowed to do everything possible for the GOP's conservative wing in the fight for party control. If both parties were dominated by liberals, he said, a new party would be needed.
