About Cirrhosis Of The Liver
coholic.
Dr. Coleman
Q: Is cirrhosis of the liver caused only by chronic alcoholism ? A: Cirrhosis of the liver is commonly identified with alcoholism. Actually, it is believed that malnutrition, so often seen in the chronic althe predominant
cause.
Cirrhosis oc-
I curs in many forms and may be produced by long exposure to poisons, like carbon tetrachloride, or other
toxic drugs. Q: What hap-
pens to the liver
to cirrhosis?
A: Changes in the architecture of the liver are caused by scar tissue, which interferes with the normal and important functions of this vital organ. Q: What are the symptoms of this condition? A: Symptoms of this or any other condition of the liver are so varied that self-diagnosis should not be attempted. The abdominal pain, weight loss, nausea and loss of appetite may be produced by many other medical conditions—some close, and others far removed from
the liver.
Q: If cirrhosis is suspected, how is the diagnosis confirmed? A: Because there are so many obscure causes of cirrhosis, the exact type must be established by concentrated
study.
There are virtually dozens of chemical studies of the blood and the urine that furnish valuable information about the type and even the severity of the liver involvement. Small pieces of tissue can be safely and painlessly removed from the liver for “biopsy’’ study.

This tissue, carefully examined under the microscope, rules out many of the other conditions with which cirrhosis of the liver may be confused. Q: Does the onset of jaundice indicate cirrhosis of the liver? A: It does not. Jaundice is a yellowish discoloration of the skin and body tissues caused by an abnormal increase of the bile salts and pigments in the blood. Jaundice can be caused by infections, like hepatitis, stones in the gall bladder system, and a variety of types of anemia. Here, too, chemical tests can indicate the cause of the jaundice. Cirrhosis of the liver is only one of the possible causes of jaundice. Q: How is cirrhosis of the liver treated? A: Attention is concentrated on the cause. Alcohol is forbidden. Diets rich in protein ar« often prescribed by physicians. Vitamin supplements, especially B12, are added to the diet. If the cause of cirrhosis is disease of the gall bladder or the bile ducts, surgery may be necessary, and even life-saving. Cirrhosis of the liver is a serious condition, especially when it goes unrecognized and uncared for by the chronic alcoholic, who sacrifices his health to the irresistible forces that compel him to drink. Alcoholic cirrhosis in its early stages lends itself to control, when the alcoholic seeks th® guidance and support of thos® who sympathetically recogniz® the basic illness of alcoholism.
