EXERCISE in moderation is no longer only suggested. It is actually prescribed for better

health.

Dr. Paul Dudley White, the Internationally known heart specialist, says, “Exercise is wonderful for the spirit The best antidote for nervous strain is fatigue from exercise. You 111 will not need || tranquilizers or 3 hypnotics if you | take a long walk in the evening, or run a mile or two if you are young Dr. Coleman enough.

“You will not

need sedatives; nature will supply you with pleasant sleeping.” Take Mild Workout Business people who live sedentary, inactive life are encouraged to take a mild workout or “jog” slowly around an indoor or outdoor track. These tracks exist in the high schools and colleges in the immediate neighborhood in almost every

community.

If such a track is not available, your ingenuity can suggest many areas where you can enjoy this workout. Dr. Sid Robinson of Indiana University states that “running is the simplest of all sports to perform. For the benefit you get out of it, running requires less time than any other ac-

tivity.”

Improves Circulation The circulation of the blood is improved by mild yet vigorous exercise of the muscles. Actually, good muscle tone of the abdominal wall and the legs aid the heart in maintaining healthy circulation. Of course, enthusiasm for exercise does not mean overactivity to the point of exhaus-

tion.

High In the mountains of Bavaria is a Cardiac Reconditioning Center which is devoted to the prevention of heart disease, and to the rehabilitation of heart patients by diet, exercise, hydrotherapy and psychic recon-

ditioning.

Inspired “Cardiac Spas’* It has won sufficient favor to inspire the creation of 3,000 “cardiac spas” all over Europe, all based on the principles of controlled exercise which is so much a part of the program of the Center in Bavaria. The idea has found proponents in America who suggest that running, swimming and pushups might even reduce high cholesterol levels in the

blood.

Four Exercise Tips Before embarking on any exercise regime to which you are not accustomed, four important suggestions are made: 1) Check with your doctor before beginning a vigorous exercise program. Competitive or strenuous exercise should be performed only after a thorough medical study. 2) Begin with a walk, increase it to a rapid or brisk walk, and then graduate into a gentle jog. Never push yourself beyond a sensible limit. 3) Don’t expect to make world records. Don’t compete with youngsters. The value of exercise is negated by exhaustion. 4) Maintain a regular program of exercise for maximum benefit. These columns are designed to relieve your fears about health through a better understanding of your mind and body. All the hopeful mew advances in medicine reported here are known to doctors everywhere. Your individual medical prob~ Jems should bo handled by youi own doctor. Be knows you best.
