Philip H, Sheridan, as well as U. S. Grant and W. T. Sherman, was an

influential factor in the defeat of their erstwhile ranking general, George B. McClellan, the Demo-

cratic nominee against Lincoln in 1864.

“Democratic prospects, so bright in August, faded with the first frosts of autumn,’’ Prof. Eugene H. Roseboom recounted in “History of Presidential Elections” (pub. by Macmillan). “On the heels of the fall of Atlanta came the successes of Sheridan in the Shenandoah Valley. . . . Cheered by the season of victory in the field, radicals and conservatives alike worked for Lincoln . . . officeholders and contractors filled the party’s campaign chest.” Stirring verses, “Sheridan’s Ride,” by Thomas Buchanan Read, which resounded through the press quickly, made the Irishman’s rallying of panicked Union troops to take victory away from Jubal Early at Cedar Creek, Va., Oct. 19, more impressive. So did plaster statuettes of Sheridan [see below] that

appeared as rivals of John Rogers’ Groups.

Direct aid was given the Lincoln-Johnson ticket

by Sheridan’s letting 10,000 Pennsylvanians in his army be furloughed to swell the Republican vote in that doubtful state. It was carried by a small majority. The Sheridan effeet upon the Irish - American vote was helpful

everywhere.
