Has New Desk INDIANAPOLIS UPI—Governor Welsh has a new desk to be topped with teak plans from the deck of the now-dismantled battleship U.S.S. Indiana. But he will only be able to enjoy it two months until his term expires. Welsh, a World War II Navy officer, ordered the desk with a top to be secured from the ship blanking later. The front of the desk will face visitors in the governor’s office with a carved wooden replica of the state seal.

WHAT causes white patches' on the face and neck? This skin condition is known as vitiligo. It may occur on the hands, too. These white patches are due to the absence of pigment (melanin) in the skin. The actual cause of this loss of pigment has never been satisfactorily determined. Dermatologists (specialists in conditions of the skin) are testing various drugs Dr. Coleman for restoring pigment to deprived skin areas. The problem of appearance can be solved by using cosmetics to cover the white patches. * * • When a person wakes from a deep sleep with a feeling of numbness and tingling of the arms, is it a cause for concern? Almost always this distressing sensation means that the blood supply to the arm was reduced by an unusual position during sleep. Pressure from the weight of the body acts almost like a tourniquet and interferes with circulation. When the pressure of weight is removed, the numbness soon disappears and is followed by tingling, as the blood once again surges through the arm. Frequent attacks of numbness of the arms or legs should be studied for the possibility of some anatomical variation from the normal. * * • For what conditions are cold applications more desirable than hot applications?

The immediate use of ice or ice compresses is soothing and beneficial for sprains, minor burns and insect bites. High fever can be effectively reduced by sponging the body with cool water. * • • Why should baby teeth be given dental care when they are going to fall out anyway and be replaced by permanent teeth? Baby teeth deserve proper dental attention. Each baby tooth "saves a place” for the permanent tooth which will replace it. When they are lost too early, the position of the permanent teeth can be affected. The total dental structure, and even the shape of the mouth and jaw can be altered by the premature loss of baby teeth. * * • What information does a doctor obtain from a “smear” of the nose or throat? A microscopic study of such smears can show the presence of unusual cells in the nose suggestive of allergy, and a w r ide variety of other possible conditions. Smears are also studied by culture to determine the germs responsible for particular kinds of infections. Smears can be taken, too, from other parts of the body, like the cervix of the uterus, and often reveal valuable information for the diagnosis and early treatment of disease. Ex-Movie Star Now A Senator SAN FRANCISCO UPI —Political freshman George Murphy rode to a U. S. Senate victory today on a surge of southern California votes in a stunning | reversal of Presidents Johnson's landslide trend. The former movie star, now a successful buisnessman, snuffed out Democrat Pierre Salinger’s hopes of landing a full six-year term in the Senate. Salinger, 39, press secretary to two presidents, trailed nightlong in the tabulations from Tuesday’s general election—but the margin was slender. Murphy was winning Los Angeles County, with 38 per cent of the state’s voters, by more than 200,000 votes to balance Salinger's edge in strongly

Democratic areas, particularly in the north. When semi-official returns from Los Angeles trickled in this morning the victory, indii cated for some time, became

assured.

Murphy, in discussing the race with his campaign w-ork-ers, earlier said he felt voters j resented the “intrusion” of Salinger who had been absent froir his native California for some years.
