By HENRY CATHCART Central Frets Washington Writer WASHINGTON—If variety in transportation meant anything, W Barry Goldwater would win the presidency in a walk. Since starting down the long road he hopes will lead to the White House, Goldwater has: Ridden a Missouri river boat, a dogsled, a bulldozer, a yacht, horses, helicopters, light planes, his campaign special 727 jet plane, a campaign train, and far too many automobiles to count. In addition, of course, Barry has done a lot of walking in order to meet the people, talk with them and shake their hands. So far, he hasn't ridden a jackass, but his campaign aides pledge that, metaphorically at least, he's going to “keep riding the Democratic donkey

until Nov. 2.”

Goldwater is a colorful campaigner. He is willing to travel in any conveyance that will bring him to groups of prospective voters. He has an outgoing personality and prides himself on speaking bluntly on the Issues, regardless of whether or not he may hurt the

too—verbally, he’s talking to.

Despite all this travel and exposure, however, Goldwater is still fighting an uphill battle. He shows signs of frustration, of seeming to be saying to himself “what else can I do to reach the minds and hearts of the voters?” In the face of adverse polls, surveys and a heavy opposition press, Goldwater is to he admired for pressing on, seeming to defy the odds and portents. He has been on the campaign trail with only a few short breaks to rest and recharge his batteries.

# MACAPAGAL MEETS REPORTERS—-As are most foreign visitors, Philippines President Diosdado Macapagal was accompanied on his trip to the United States by a group of Filipino news correspondents. They followed him faithfully wherever ho

One of his functions was to deliver a speech and answer questions from the audience at the National Press Club In Washington. Macapagal proved himself to be a deft performer. He spoke well, displayed a truly broad grasp of the American language and showed remarkable agility in fielding the numerous questions asked of him. In club tradition, the final question is designed to be light in tone and offers the* guest of honor an opportunity to display his wit. Macapagal was asked: “Do you make your reporters walk miles when you conduct your press conferences as President Johnson does?” The Philippines president looked down at the press representatives of bis country, seated directly below the dais, and suggested that perhaps one of the reporters should answer the question. r An intrepid young man arose and replied. ‘T do not the question is properly phrased.
