H00SIER SKIES By Indiana University Astronomy Department About 11 p. m. (EST) the first part of November, the vernal equinox stands nearly on the celestial meridian in Indiana. The vernal equinox not only marks the position of the sun at the beginning of spring, but it is also important to astronomers because it helps in estab-

lishing the position of all celes' tial objects. Just as longitude on the earth is measured east or west of the meridian passing through Greenwich, England, so in the skies astronomers measure ‘‘right ascension,” which is an object’s distance east (never west) of the celestial meridian passing through the vernal equinox. Corresponding to latitude on the earth is declination, which 'is a celestial objects distance north or south of the celestial

equator.

Thus, just as we locate a city or a ship on earth by its latitude or longitude, we locate a star, planet, nebula, or other object in the sky by its declin-

I ation and right ascension. But whereas latitude and longitude values are constant, declination and right ascension are constantly, although slowly,

changing.

The change is due to the fact ' that the axis of the earth is j slowly wobbling, like the axis I of a spinning top that its slowing down. This results in a wobbling motion of the earth’s equator, and a similar movement of the celestial equator, which is a projection on the sky of the earth’s equator. It takes about 26.00 years for the equinoxes to make a complete circuit of the ecliptic. The vernal equinox is called “the first point of Aries,” but it is now a long way from that

i constellation. Several thousand years ago, the spring equinox was in Aries, but, due to precession it has slipped backward into Pisces, the adjoining constellation of the zodiac. Another result of precession is the change of position of the celestial poles, which describe a complete circle in 26,000 years. The north pole now is within one degree of the star Polaris, and is moving closer to it, so that they will be only about one-half degree apart in the year 2100. People living in the year 7500 will observe Alpha Cephei as their pole star, and Polaris will circle around it at a distance of 28 degrees, or nearly one-third the distance from the horizon to the zenith.
