should be treated, whether or not any causal relationship exists. Q: How can the diagnosis be established of any particular kind of arthritis? A: The exact history of the disease, followed by physical examination, and X-ray study, can in most instances determine the kind and character of the arthritis. Studies of the blood, metabolism and hormones reveal important information on which treatment is subsequently based. Q: How is arthritis treated? A: Physicians devote their attention to the relief af pain, and to the preventiot of incapacitating deformities. The consensus of medical opinion is that the earlier the treatment is begun, the better is the eventual result. Excessive fatigue must be avoided. A well-balanced diet— supplemented with minerals and vitamins—is essential. In special cases, modified exercise, diathermy, hot packs and infrared heat are given. Ultrasonic vibrations and whirlpool baths can bring comforting relief to arthritics. Salicylates (aspirin) are used extensively for relief of pain . . . sometimes around the clock, under medical supervision. The discovery of ACTH and cortisone has brought new horizons of hope for sufferers of arthritis. There is probably no group of patients who are so subjected to exploitation by quackery and fraud as is the arthritic. Your own doctor is the only reliable clearing house for any type of treatment.
