Readers Are Asking . . . IS THERE a normal period of [ Diet pills must never — but time for convalescence after! never—be taken without the
surgery for appendix, gall bladder or prostate? Convalescence is a period of recuperation of energy and vitality which is temporarily decreased by illness, surgery, anesthesia and hospitalization. ■ The time required for complete recovery varies with each individual. Age, . general physic a 1 condition, the severity of the operation and the emoI Dr. Coleman tional attitude of the patient are all factors which affect the length of convalescence. Some patients feel they are : "ready to go” the day after major surgery. Others take weeks and even months to re- . gain their energy and resume normal activity. * There is no standard time- - table for convalescence. The individual himself can usually judge when his body is again _ In condition for full perform- - ence. Under the physician’s ; supervision, the *‘back-to-vvork” . date can be established. * * * Can there be harmful effects from the continued use of diet pills that curb the appetite? Pills that kill the appetite •re also stimulants to the heart •ad general body functions. T These pills sometimes in- - crease the heart rate, raise the blood pressure and produce marked nervousness and irriT lability. Their use is definitely forbidden in some circulatory conditions.
specific suggestion and guidance of a physician. • 4 * Is there any new type of operation for the removal of cataracts? The extraction of eye cataracts can now be successfully performed by cryosurgery. This technique uses an instrument filled with extremely cold liquid nitrogen. Removal of a cataract by this new method has some advantages in certain cases. But cryosurgery, or cold surgery, is not used in all cases. The discriminating judgment of the surgeon will determine which surgical technique is best for each individual patient. * * * Can the mumps gland become swollen without having mumps? There are two “mumps” or parotid glands, one on either side of the face. Both produce saliva, vital for the digestion of food. The parotid gland can become infected and swollen not only by the mumps virus, but by other bacteria as well. Sometimes a small stone may form in the tube through which saliva passes into the mouth. This causes a backing up of saliva that results in a temporary swelling of the parotid gland. While Dr. Coleman cannot undertake to answer individual letters, he will use readers? questio)is in his column whenever possible aiul when they are of general interest. Address your letters to Dr. Coleman in care of this newspaper.

Livelier Comet proves once again why it s the World's Durability Champion. Uses showroom models in day-and-night grind from the bottom to the top of the world. FAIRBANKS, Oct. 22 - Three Mercury Comets today f n shed a run no car has ever attempted m so short a time—the rugged 16,200-mile grind fronrfCape Horn to Fairbanks En route, day and night, the cars had no major repairs, just routine maintenance. That’s ample proof that 1965 Comets are powerful and tough, not just lively and beautiful.
Shades of Daytona! Comet is famous for durability. Last year, specially equipped Comets ran 100,000 miles at Daytona in 40 days. Regular production-model Comets used, just like showroom Comets.
