Make Your Own Draperies There are over 50 million sewing machines in America today, and most of them are owned by women who consider sewing a creative outlet as well as just plain fun. If you’re one of these women, why not try sewing some new draperies
or curtains? The easiest fabrics with which to make draperies are
of Fiberglas. They won’t shrink, stretch or sag. This makes accurate measuring possible. No allowances are necessary. Here are a few simple rules for machine-sewing Fiberglas fabrics. The Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corporation suggests, first of all, experiment with a sample of the fabric, just to get the feel of it in the machine. Now you’re ready to go. Set your machine for a long stitch (approx. 8 stitches an inch), with a loose tension for top and bottom threads. Use a good quality fine cotton mercerized thread, and a sharp needle. With a light pressure, just glide your fabric through the machine. You’ll soon approach the home stretch with your draperies, and, as you do, here’s a few more ideas to give your draperies that "finished” look. It’s not necessary to cut off the selvage. The selvage on < Fiberglas fabrics is finished in
the same manner as the body of the fabric. Because Fiberglas will not stretch or shrink and is highly resistant to fading, th^re is no need to line your draperies. If you do choose to line your draperies with a fabric other than Fiberglas, hang it on a separate rod as the second fabric may shrink when laundered. When making your heading, be sure that any fabric stitched to the Fiberglas is pre-shrunk. Weights won’t be necessary to the appearance of your

draperies, but if you do decide to use them, light weight beading and seam weights are recommended. They can be bought in most trimming or department stores. When your last stitch is in, you can hang your new curtains or draperies right on your windows—no ironing is necessary. It’s no wonder that, with a machine, a little time, and the right fabric, sewing has become such an adventure for American women.
NEW SERVICE NEW YORK (UPI)—Icelandic Airlines will start full ietprop service from New York Nov. 1 it was announced by John J. Loughery, U.S. sales manager. The airline currently operates both Rolls-Royce 100 jet-prop and DC-6B prop flights from Kennedy International Airport to Iceland and eight other European countries. The changeover to full jetprop service will not affect Icelandic’s long-standing low fare policy, Loughery said. Rates aboard the jet-props will be the same as on current DC6B flights, offering savings to Europe ranging from §59.60 to §137.40, he said.
