... AT THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE The President and Vice President are elected not by direct vote of the people but by the Electoral College, as provided for in the Constitution. When you cast your vote in the presidential election on November 3 you will do so by voting for electors on the slate of one or the other party. Each state has as many electors as it

has Senators and Representatives in the Congress, but no member of Congress or teaeral officeholder shall be an elector. The 50 states, with 100 Senators and 435 Representatives, account for 535 members of the Electoral College, but in 1964, for the first time since passage of the 23rd Amendment to the Constitution giving the District of Columbia three electoral votes, members will number

538. The Electoral College never meets as a body. Electors meet in their state capitals—this year. December 14. By custom, each elector votes for his party’s national nominees; the Constitution does not require him to do so. but exceptions have been rare. Certified and sealed lists of the votes are sent to the President of the U. S. Senate and on January 6, in i presence of Senate and House in joint session, he opens the certificates and the votes are counted. The, Constitution pro-

vides that (1) if no candidate I ] for President has a majority j ! the House (one vote to each state) chooses one of the three i top candidates, and (2) if no ; candidate for Vice President has a majority the Senate (one | vote to each Senator) chooses i from the two top candidates. .... AT CONGRESSIONAL RACES.

This year 35 U. S. Senators are to be elected and. of course, all 435 members of the House of Representatives. Two of the Senate races will be special elections to fill unexpired terms of the late Senators Kefuaver (R., Tenn.) and Kerr (D., Okla.)

“COUNTY SEAT” — handsome Colonial furniture that takes its name from the frontier's most popular towns. The fine Pecan woods are finished in a rich, marresistant, Praline Brown. The Colonial mood is heightened by the extra heavy drawer fronts, the superb antiquing and

Auto Workers’ hopes for preserving the historic profitsharing contract with American Motors were all but dead today with the company and union going into the final stages of bargaining for a new , contract for some 26,000 workers. AMC Vice President Edward L. Cushman and director of the UAW American Motors department Douglas Fraser agreed : the company’s economic offer Monday left the two sides relatively close together on a national economic agreement. But the optimism w a s clouded by qualifications by | both sides. Fraser said the 1 union wanted the profit sharing ! — or progress sharing — program continued, even though AMC dropped it when it framed the offer along the lines of settlements the union won from the big three. Cushman, in turn said any national settlement between

AMC and the UAW would b* contingent on five demands tha company included in the offer that must be agreed to on tha local level.
