•TM SIMPLY exhausted. Just plain worn out.” This would seem to be chiefly the complaint of the activity-bur-dened housewife-mother of energetic children. But exhaustion is also common to healthy, adult males, growing children, adolescents and almost everyone. Fatigue is a healthy body mechanism at work, warning and protecting it against further physical and emotional Dr. Coleman stresses. No two human beings have the same reserve stores of energy. Individuals themselves vary from day to day in their level of energy output. Close Bond The relationship between physical and emotional fatigue is a very intimate one. In fact, the bond is so close that the division between them is sometimes elusive. Fatigue prevents the body from overextending itself. It also is known to be an unconscious means of avoiding confronting situations that are emotionally distressing. The rebound from severe fatigue has been of great interest to students of body function. An unexpected pleasurable experience or a sudden emergency can convert in an instant the “tired-to-death” body into one with new-found energy. Many Reasons It has been of interest, too, that fatigue without any physical exhaustion can be brought on by boredom, loneliness, domestic worries, emotional frustrations and even bad weather. We see, therefore, that physical and emotional fatigue are constant companions. Heart and circulatory disease, digestive disturbances and anemias, expectedly produce fa-
tigue. Malnutrition, convalescense from surgery, acute infections and menopausal changes are also associated with fatigue, even after slight physical exertion. How does this intricate protective system of body protection work ? At one time, it was believed that muscular fatigue resulted from an excess accumulation of the waste-prod-uct, lactic acid, after exertion. Inadequate Explanation This simple explanation was not adequate. Now, it is believed that within the brain there is a “fatigue center switchboard” which accepts and translates chemical and hormone messages as a protection against overexhaustion. The body’s output of adrenalin, thyroid and cortisone is known to vary with fear, anxiety and physical exertion. Extreme fatigue diminishes the activity of the entire glandular system. There is a constant interaction between the production of hormones, the body’s requirements, and the fatigue elements that alter the balance. Simple Cure Sometimes The treatment for fatigue depends on its initial cause. Sometimes sufficient sleep, or a relaxing bath or massage, will immediately return the body’s “bounce.” When there is underlying anxiety or emotional conflict, such simple methods are usually ineffectual. Fatigue begs for recognition. It does not necessarily permanently change our capacity to function. Rather, it temporarily diminishes our energy output and thereby pleads for rest, to keep the body at its peak of function. These columns are designed to relieve your fears about health through a better understanding of your mind and body. AU the hopeful new advances in medicine reported here are known to doctors everywhere. Your individual medical problems should be handled by your own doctor. He knows you best.
