A Fav Facts About Ulcers

Q: WHAT Is an ulcer of the Stomach ? A: It is a small sore on the delicate lining: of the stomach or duodenum (upper intes-

tine).

Q: Is there a known cause of ulcers? A: The suspicion is that overactivity of hydrochloric acid and digestive II juices (enzymes » is a primary cause Emotional stress is considered to be an I important facDr. Coleman tor in the production of this condition. Q: Is there such a thing as an "ulcer personality?” A: Statistically speaking, it can probably be said that certain character traits make some people more prone to ulcers than others. The classic "ulcer personality” is a chronic worrier, easily angered, impatient, energetic and ambitious. He drives himaelf relentlessly on nervous en-

ergy.

Many people delude themselves by assuming that only theirs is the ulcer-producing business. Actually, it is the temperament, not the business, that creates ulcers. Q: Do women get ulcers as often as men? A: No. Men are much more prone to ulcers. Q: Can children develop ul-

cers?

A: Yes. Ulcers have been known to occur in children even under the age of eix. The condition is not as rare in children as is commonly suspected. Q: Are ulcers dangerous? A: Usually ulcers can be con

trolled with proper care, rigid diet and medication. In many cases the physician may limit the use of tobacco and alcohol. The relief of emotional atress and chronic worry is vital to the control and cure of ulcers. An ulcer can become a serious problem if neglected and untreated. Q: What is a bleeding ulcer? A: There is no special type of ulcer that bleeds. If the erosion of the stomach lining becomes very deep, blood vessels in the area may break and bleed. Q: What are the symptoms

of ulcer?

A: The symptoms differ with the location of the ulcer. In general, there is growing pain in the upper abdomen which is usually relieved by taking small quantities of bland, soft foods and medication. Q: Is surgery always necessary for the cure? A: No. Surgery is chosen with discriminating judgment. The decision is based on a complete evaluation of each individual case. In most cases rigid diet, medication and the relief of mental tensions can control the condition without surgery. Ulcers are controllable and often curable. As with all diseases, the exact diagnosis determines the treatment. The location of the ulcer, its duration and its severity are all factors which must be considered by the physician in choosing the best course of treatment for each ulcer patient.
