Q: WHAT is “strawberry tongue” and “geographic tongue”? A: The tongue often serves as a mirror of disease that exists elsewhere in the body. In Scarlet Fever, the outer surface of the tongue peels away and develops a straw- • : berry-red color. “Geographic tongue” refers to a series of deep furrows oddly distributed all over the tongue, not unlike a bas-relief map. The conDr. Coleman dition is of no special medical importance. Vitamin deficiencies, allergies and many diseases are reflected in the condition of the tongue. Q: Do bulging eyes affect the acuteness of vision? A: Bulging, or protrusion of the eyeballs, may occur in cases of hyperthyrodism, or excess secretion of the thyroid hormone. There are other conditions, too, that are responsible for sudden, or slowly increasing, bulging of the eyes. In most instances, the acuteness of the vision is totally unrelated. The basic cause of bulging of the eyes should be determined in order to relieve this physical and cosmetic change. Q: What is the importance of a very slow or very rapid pulse? A: A slow pulse, or bradycardia, would be a count of less than 60 heartbeats per minute. There are numerous reasons for a slow heart beat, some serious
and some unimportant. Some diseases, like meningitis, can produce a alow pulse rate. Even pressure on the neck, by wearing a very tight collar, can actually cause the same thing. In most instances; a slow pulse does not produce any other symptoms. In fact, athletes under severe pressure, in competition, often have very slow pulses. A rapid pulse, or tachycardia, would be a count of more than 100 heartbeats per minute. Exercise, emotional stress, hemorrhage, infection and drugs are some of the causes of a very rapid heart rate. Both the slow and rapid heartbeats can often be controlled when the exact cause is determined. Q: Why are minerals considered so important for the body? A: A very delicate balance exists in the normal healthy body between minerals, water and the acid-alkaline relationship. Changes in this extremely precise mechanism occur with protracted vomiting, diarrhea, burns and loss of fluids after surgery. By accurate chemical determination, the electrolyte balance of minerals and water can be re-established. That is why minerals and fluids of definite composition are effectively used after operations. While Dr. Coleman cannot undertake to answer individual letters, he will use readera’ questions in his column whenever possible and when they arc of general interest.
