Humphrey Calls For Compassion KALAMAZOO, Mich. UPI— Democratic vice presidtial cancandidate Hubert H. Humphrey today called for an America of compassion, ideals and belief— “a place for the renewal of the ; human spirit.” Humphrey made the stateI ment in a speech prepared for delivery at Western Michigan University. The Minnesota sena1 tor took his campaign into I Michigan after a day in New I York City with Senate candidate Robert F. Kennedy. Humphrey also was scheduled i to speak today at Grand Rapids, Bay City and Flint. His speech at Kalamzoo echoed President Johnsons often repeated exhortation: “Let jus continue.” Humphrey said: [ "We need an America with the wisdom of experience. But ; we must not let America grow old in spirit. “Let us continue to be an America of new faith in old dreams. Let us continue to be an America eternally vigorous ; and creative. Let America coni tinue to be an arsenal of Ideas and hope for this weary planet. Let us retain compassion in the midst of indifference, ideals in in the midst of cynicism, belief in the midst of despair. “Let America continue to be , what it was meant to be by its ! founders—a place for the renewal of the human spirit.” In an oblique criticism of ; GOP presidential nominee i Barry M. Golwater—who he did i not mention by name—Hum[phrey said, “The American dream was not conceived in the | conscience of conservatives but j in the hopes of visionaries. Its I theme was ingenuity and inno-
vation.”
Bobby Baker “kickback.” The GOP presidential nominee scheduled speeches today in five states — broken by an Albany visit with New York Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller and climaxed by an evening address in Louisville, Ky. But the burden of his effort was aimed at saving New England for himself and the GOP. He was flying from Boston to Portland, Maine, Concord, N. H„ Albany and Burlington, Vt., before jetting south to Louis-
ville.
Goldwater charged in a speech prepared for delivery at Albany that the Democrats are reading more “whitewash” for the new Senate hearing in the Baker case. These involve an alleged $25,000 “kickback” to j the Democratic party from Philj adelphia contractor Matthew McCloskey. “In fact, the whitewash may be mixed extra thick this time,” he said. “After all, the committee is supposed to look into a kickback that could have directly benefited Lyndon Johnson’s political career. And, under the rules as apparently laid down by the former leader of
the Bobby Baker fan club, Lyndon Baines Johnson himself, the closer the connection, the bigger the whitewash. Thursday night, Goldwater suggested in Boston that Johnson might have used some of this kickback in his 1960 effort to win the Democratic presidential nomination from the late President Kennedy. The Arizona senator issued this statement as part of his prepared speech for some 24,000 fans who turned out to hear him at a rally in Boston’s Fenway Park. But the specific Johnson-Kennedy reference was never uttered. Goldwater aides explained that through inadvertence, this part of the text had not been fed into the teleprompter from which the senator read his speech.
