of Hatteras, N. C. near latitude 35.1 north and longitude 72.5 west. It was moving to the northnorthwest at a very slow speed, but weather officials said they expected “considerable increase” in speed of the hurricane later today. The Washington Weather Bureau predicted the hurricane would follow a north-northwest to north course, turning slightly away from the mainland, through most of today. Pushing 25 m.p.h. winds 50 miles outward from its center, Gladys buffeted the North Carolina and Virginia coasts with strong winds and poundnig seas Tuesday and today. 'COPTER PILOT LOGS 10,000 SAFE HOURS Helicopter pilot J. A. VanDerVliet logged his 10.000th accident-free hour this week flying for Public Service Company of Indiana. VanDerVliet began patrohng power lines for the investor-owned electric utility in 1954. Publis Service Company Vice President Walter J. Matthews presented VanDerVliet a Reddy Kilowatt trophy for his record of service and safety. Matthews said more than 33,000 miles are covered by an air patrol crew each year. The company has some 5,400 miles of power transmission lines in its 69-county service area. VanDerVliet started flying in 1939 as a crop duster. He has a personal safety record of more than 15,000 air hours. VanDerVliet switched to helicopters in 1953 when he joined the staff of Lewis College. Lockport, Illinois. The college leases aircraft and pilots on a commercial basis. Safety flying records show that only one other helicopter pilot has flown 10,000 hours without an accident. Bell Helicopter Corp., Fort Worth, Texas, plans to recognize VanDerVliet’s flying achievement. VanDerVliet and his wife reside at 848 Longfellow Drive. Plainfield.

from glass fragments. High tides cut away five to 10-foot-tall sand dunes north of Buxton on Hatteras Island, separating the Outer Banks community from the mainland. Around 3.000 persons were stranded on the island, whose only highway crumbled with the dunes. Ferry service to the communities, Buxton, Hatteras and Ocracoke, was canceled because of the storm. But the storm-wise residents battened dowm for the night. They weathered a similar predicament two years ago when another storm eroded the dunes.
