~g tAMANT HEATING

Korean noblemen taught the lesson of radiant heating at least 1,000 years before Troy fed to the Greeks. They buitt "Spring Rooms" in their homes. Fires were burnt in their hollow masonry floors, and the otmosphere wo* spring-like even on cold, damp days. Z*

The oncient Romans heated their bathhouses in much the some way. You can still see examples of this "hypocaust" system at the baths of CaracaKa in Rome and ot the Roman baths, m Bath, England.

w* & ^ The big difference in* radksnt heating nowadays is that tough buttwelded steel pipe is used instead of hollow masonry sections. Pre-formed panels of steel pipe ore embedded in the floors, walls or ceilings of our modern buildings. The hot water circulated through this sturdy pipe assures on ideally comfortable indoor climate.

^MHEAITL ■ —— By LESTER L. COLEMAN, M.D. Aging Process Being Studied

THE FOUNTAIN of youth has, for centuries, been the target for endless searches. Special mineral waters in far-distant lands, and fruits grown in the soil of sun-drenched islands have been pursued with the hope of finding the elusive formula for eternal youth. Some adults are actually glad to have youth well behind them. There are others who feel that “youth should not be wasted on the Dr. Coleman young.” Today the phenomenon of the aging process is being studied, not as a matter of vanity, but rather to sustain good health for longer periods of productive

living.

Study Body Acids Enlightening knowledge of the processes of aging is now claiming the attention and absorbing interest of chemists and physicians who are working with body proteins and nucleic

acids.

These have virtually revolutioned the knowledge of heredity, growth and aging. Nucleic acid is said to hold the answer to some of the characteristics of aging. Queries On Aging Why does the body function slow down with age? Why is there a loss of elasticity and tissue? Why does bona and cartilage become more brittle? Why do the blood vessels become clogged with placques of calcium? Why Is the aging body less resistant to disease and injury? The complex molecules of body protein and nucleic acids seem in theory to possess the | answers. If verified, it is hoped that the aging process will be

controlled, and that the elderly will continue to live a completa and vigorous life without tha fears of precarious health. • • a PEOPLE IN GLASS HOUSES Recently a man walked right through a big plate glass door in an airline terminal. Fortunately, he survived what might have been a fatal accident. These accidents are becoming more and more frequent. Sliding glass patio doors, large clear picture windows, entrance doors of commercial buildings, all present a hazard of growing concern. The United States Publia Health Service and the National Safety Council have issued safety precautions against plate glass accidents. Most important is the suggestion that all plate glass be decorated witli some kind of decal at eye level, both for adults and for children. The potential danger of wida expanses of unmarked plat# glass are too great to justify its use unless proper protectiva measures are taken. > Warn Them Children particularly should be warned against running and “horse play” near these glass doors. New guests in the horns should always be advised that the clear partitions are glas% not “air.” When the glass is of a “safety” type—tempered, laminated or wired—a hurrying person may have his dignity injured, but his body will be mors likely to remain intact. These columns are designed to relieve your fears about health through a better under* standing of your mind and body. All the hopeful new advances in medicine reported here are known to doctors everywhere. Your individual medical problems should be handled by your own doctor. He knows you best.
