Doors are more than functional: through history, they have reflected changing tastes and living habits. Ultra-mod-ern steel doors, developed by researchers at U S. Steel, are fire-resistant, won’t waip, vhnnk or crack.
BORDERLINE AGREEMENT—President Johnson signs the Columbia River Treaty between the U. S. and Canada at th* International Peace Arch at Blaine, Wash., on the Canadian border. The treaty ends a water dispute.
A NEW and exciting drug called DMSO is causing a sensation in the scientific and medical world. The letters DMSO are short for Dimethyl Sulfoxide. The drug was discovered, or actually rediscovered, by Dr. Stanley W. Jacob and Dr. Robert Herschler of the | University of Oregon Medical School. The original | discovery oc- , , , curred about , v 100 years ago, when it was found to be a Dr. Coleman by-product in the process of manufacturing paper. Only ten years ago did it come to scientific attention again when it was observed, and found useful as a chemical solvent and an anti-freezing agent. Medical Coincidence Its medical possibilities came to light, as frequently happens In science, by sheer coincidence. A chemist, working with DMSO, noticed that after washing his hands in this solvent, he was aware of a peculiar sensation in his mouth. There was a sudden, distinctive taste of oysters, and an odor of garlic on his breath. This happened each time he washed his hands. Had this simple observation been overlooked, DMSO might have been unrecognized and unnoticed for ita medical possibilities. Curiosity Paid Off At first, out of sheer curiosity, the Oregon scientists began to explore the drugs’ po tential, and thus started to uncover many of its bizarre and exciting medical properties. The enthusiastic claims are almost too good to be true. Bursitis, forms of arthritis, sprains, headaches, and sinusitis are said to be relieved and even cured by this strange, new and unverified “miracle drug.'’
Medical investigators find DMSO a tranquilizer, and even an antibiotic. It is. also said to enhance or augment the healing properties of many other drugs that are now in active use. Severe bums, always a desperate medical problem, seem to be benefited in the healing and in the reduction of the «xcrutiating pain. Carefully Evaluated DMSO, like all other drugs, is being carefully scrutinized and evaluated for any possibilities of toxic side reactions before being released. Under the parental supervisory and protective control of the United States Food and Drug Administration, even tha experimental use of the drug is being carefully limited. Under their guidance, medical scientists are studying all the potential values and the possible hazards of this drug which has captured the enthusiasm and imagination of the medical world. Safety Is Keynote Safety is the keynote with this and other newly discovered drugs. It is estimated that a year or two of careful observation ^iust still precede Its presence on the drug market. It is encouraging to note that the early reports of the benefits of DMSO on animals and humans are corroborating the hopeful speculations. The dedicated scientists and physicians who have assiduously devoted their energies to the development of DMSO are optimistic that this new drug will bring greater help and newer hope to mankind everywhere. These columns are designed to relieve your fears about health through a better understanding of your mind and body. AH the hopeful new advances in medicine reported hers ars known to doctors everywhers. Your individual medical problems should be handled by your own doctor. He knows you best.
