MY TWIN children, a girl and a boy, are 19 years old. They, like many other teen-age children in our community, have adopted the “Hollywood look’’ of wearing sunglasses all day long, and often at night. We feel that this can be harmful to their eyes. As al- | -O w’ays. the accusation is that | we are “square.” [ Is there a medi- | cal basis for our ' concern? Mrs. M. R.,
Illinois
Dear Mrs. R.: It is astomsh-
Dr. Coleman ing how often
“square” par-
ents are really “in the groove” with their mature judgment. A good pair of sunglasses is beneficial and restful to eyes exposed to glaring sunlight. Intense sunlight, reflected off concrete. water, beaches and snow,
As dusk becomes deeper, it often becomes impossible to see an oncoming car whose headlights have not yet been turned on. When darkness finally sets in, and the headlights are on, the danger still persists and. in fact, may be more marked. For the margins of your own beam of light are less visible and less distinctly outlined. Reports of automobile accidents and injuries to pedestrians and cyclists have been directly attributed to the diminished vision of drivers wearing sunglasses after twilight. It would seem wise to reserve the “Hollywood look” for appropriate hours of the day. • • • We usually stop our children's daily vitamins during the summertime. When should they be resumed ? Mrs. E. sometimes directed at glamour
without a real appreciation of any potential hazard. Poorly made glasses of inferior quality can be particularly tiring to the eyes when worn over a long
period of time.
When the intense rays of the sun are diminished towards the end of the day, the purpose and value of sunglasses are unques-
tionably diminished, too.
A real hazard can be introduced when anyone wears sunglasses while driving an automobile at dusk and after sundown. At this time of the day, sunglasses may reduce any remaining glare, but at the same time they markedly reduce the
light needed for
vision.
In older children, proper diet and sunlight usually eliminate the need for additional vitamins in the summertime. For these children and adults, mid-Sep-tember or early October is a good time to resume the vitamin schedule, if such is the pattern
of the household.
Incidentally, it should be
noted that too often vitamins are wastefully and unnecessarily consumed without the specific advice of the physician.

A new look of size and motion is combined in the 1965 Fairlane, restyled from bumper to bumper for the first time since its introduction three years ago. Although new styling makes the middleweight Fairlane look bigger, it remains about the size of the 1956 Ford on the outside and the 1959 Ford on the inside. Improved ride and econ« omy; new low-profile tires for greater directional stability, better traction and longer life; significantly improved interior quietness; alternators and automatic chokes standard on all engines: and a complete line of options including low -cost air conditioning are features of all 1965 Fairlanes including the Fairlane Sports Coupe (above). Fight Fairlane models — hardtops. station wagons and sedans — will he introduced in Ford dealer showrooms Friday. September 25.
